The Ghanaian twins romance scam case ended in guilty pleas after two brothers and an American woman admitted conspiring to defraud older people of more than $9 million.
Jamal and Kamal Abubakari, both 22, of Ghana, and Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie, 53, of Kula, Hawaii, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
The twins pleaded guilty on 13 October, and Opoku-Boachie followed on 20 October.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the case came from the US Attorney’s Office in Ohio’s Northern District.
HOW THE SCHEME WORKED
The group used fake personas to build close, often romantic, relationships with victims. After false stories, victims wired money to accounts the network controlled.
Some funds went on to co-conspirators in Ghana and elsewhere. The fraud ran from about July 2024 to April 2026 and targeted older Americans on dating sites and social media.
Victims lived in 25 US states, plus Germany and Austria.
ARRESTS, FORFEITURES AND SENTENCING
The twins were arrested in Virginia in May 2026. The three agreed to forfeit seized jewellery, including luxury watches and rings.
The FBI’s Cleveland Division led the investigation. Each defendant faces up to 20 years. The twins will be sentenced on 9 February 2027, and Opoku-Boachie on 10 February.
A PATTERN GHANA KNOWS
This is not the first such case. Ghanaian influencer Mona Faiz Montrage, known as Hajia4Reall, earlier pleaded guilty in a $2 million romance scam case.
Romance fraud trades on loneliness more than on technology. A fake lover costs a scammer little, while victims lose savings and trust. ValidViewNetwork reports.
