US President Donald Trump has said he does not want Norwegian immigrants in the United States because Norway’s Nobel Committee did not award him the Peace Prize, escalating a bizarre diplomatic row with Oslo just days before the midterm elections.
The Trump Norway Nobel Prize snub remarks were made during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE ATTACK
Trump did not hold back.
“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually,” he said during the rally.
He suggested that the United States should accept fewer Norwegian immigrants, saying:
“I didn’t get the Nobel Prize. So I don’t want anybody from Norway. I don’t want anything to do with Norway”.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this year to Navi Pillay, a South African human rights lawyer and former UN rights chief. Trump has called the committee’s choice “a disgraceful and embarrassing decision” and argued that the award should have gone to him .
NORWAY’S RESPONSE
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded on Monday, maintaining that the Nobel Committee is independent.
“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering – and that is still the case,” Eide told national broadcaster NRK .
Erik Aasheim, a spokesman for the Norwegian Nobel Institute, said in a statement: “The Nobel Committee is entirely independent of the Norwegian government” .
Norway’s Parliament appoints the committee’s five members for six-year terms. To protect the organisation’s independence, members of the government have been barred from sitting on the committee since 1936, and incumbent lawmakers since 1977 .
THE CONTEXT
Trump has openly jockeyed for the Peace Prize for about a decade, mentioning it in dozens of interviews and speeches and complaining about it privately.
He described the committee’s decision this month to award Ms. Pillay the 2026 prize as “an indelible stain on Norway” .
There was no official indication of a new US policy on Norwegian immigrants.
According to Norway’s office for government statistics, more Americans immigrated to Norway in 2025 than Norwegians immigrated to the United States.
Last year, 1,529 American citizens moved to Norway, compared with 1,005 Norwegians who relocated to the United States.
WHY IT MATTERS
Trump’s remarks are more than a diplomatic gaffe. They are a window into a presidency that treats international relations as a personal transaction.

He did not get the prize.
Therefore, he does not want the people of the country that awards it. It is a logic that would be comical if it were not coming from the leader of the world’s most powerful nation.
For Norway, the insult is bemusing.
For the Nobel Committee, it is a reminder of the independence that Trump refuses to accept.
For the world, it is another example of a US president who sees diplomacy as a zero-sum game. The midterms are on November 3. Trump is campaigning on grievance.
And Norway, a small Scandinavian nation of 5.5 million people, is his latest target. ValidViewNetwork reports.
