Ruth Ogunleye, the former Nigerian Army private who publicly accused senior officers of sexual harassment and claimed top military authorities turned a blind eye, has reportedly been arrested and taken into custody.

According to a source familiar with the matter cited by SaharaReporters on Monday, Ogunleye was moved from Lagos to a correctional facility. Initial accounts pointed to Kaduna State, while another reference named Abuja, leaving her precise location unclear. The source claimed the arrest was ordered by Defence Minister General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.) and that she is awaiting trial. No specific offence has been disclosed, and no official confirmation of the charges, the court involved, or her exact place of detention has emerged

The development has revived a long-running controversy that began in January 2024, when Ogunleye took to TikTok to accuse Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem of unwanted sexual advances and alleged intimidation and maltreatment by Colonel G.S. Ogor and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo. She maintained that her problems intensified after she rejected the advances and that she sought help from senior officers, including then Chief of Defence Staff General Musa, without receiving the intervention she expected. She cited Section 179 of the Armed Forces Act, arguing that the military’s internal redress procedures failed her.

The Nigerian Army investigated the claims. In September 2024, then Director of Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu announced that the probe found no evidence to substantiate the sexual harassment allegations against Colonel Abdulkareem. Authorities stated that Ogunleye was discharged on medical grounds following assessments that indicated a condition rendering her medically vulnerable.

She received certain benefits, including a partial pension arrangement despite not meeting the standard service years. Ogunleye rejected the findings, called for a review, and expressed concern that the investigation may have been compromised. She also spoke of the personal stigma and reputational damage she faced.

In subsequent months, Ogunleye continued to speak out on social media, at times directing new claims at other senior figures, including the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy. Those later allegations were rejected by the NDA, which described them as unverified and defamatory and indicated it had begun legal processes. Reports in late October 2026 also circulated that she had gone missing after claiming people attempted to force entry into her residence, prompting appeals from associates for information on her whereabouts.

SaharaReporters said it contacted Army spokesperson Colonel Appolonia Anele for comment on the reported arrest but received no response. As of the latest accounts, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Defence Ministry has issued an official statement confirming the detention, identifying the charges, clarifying the location, or addressing the claim that the minister ordered the arrest.

Without those details, it remains premature to link the reported detention directly to Ogunleye’s earlier accusations or to treat any connection as established fact. An arrest is not a conviction, and key questions persist: What specific offence is alleged? Which authority effected the arrest?

Where exactly is she being held?

Has she been formally charged and brought before a court within the timeframes required by law?

And is there any verified connection to her previous complaints against senior officers?

Ogunleye’s case has long highlighted tensions around accountability, internal military processes, and the handling of complaints by junior personnel against superiors. The reported arrest adds a new chapter, but clarity from the relevant authorities is still required before the full picture can be established.
