Tragedy struck the quiet of the night at ASCO Camp in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, on Friday, October 23, 2026, when a police corporal allegedly opened fire on his female colleague before turning the same weapon on himself, leaving two officers dead and the state police command scrambling to unravel the motive.
Corporal Amos Yusuf, who had reported for night duty as a station guard around 6pm, reportedly abandoned his post hours later. He made his way to the residential quarters of Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi. There, according to preliminary findings and accounts circulating among sources, he fired multiple shots at her, striking her in the shoulder, lower abdomen and leg, before turning the AK-47 rifle on himself.
The alarm was raised at about 11:04pm. The Divisional Police Officer in Ajaokuta immediately led a team to the scene. Both officers were rushed to separate medical facilities, where doctors pronounced them dead. Their remains were later deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital. Crime scene investigators recovered the AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges as exhibits.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Kogi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, confirmed the deaths of the two serving officers. “Preliminary findings indicate that Corporal Amos Yusuf, who was on night duty, shot Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi and thereafter shot himself,” she said. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough probe.
The command stressed that the circumstances and possible motive remain under investigation. “The Command will not speculate on matters yet to be established,” Afusat added.
Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi extended his condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers.
While official investigators have declined to comment on motive, earlier reports from sources familiar with the officers painted a picture of a relationship that had soured. The two junior officers had reportedly been involved for some years. In recent months, trust issues and allegations of infidelity allegedly led to physical fights and threats. At one point the Divisional Crime Officer reportedly detained them and advised them to end the relationship for the sake of peace. Those claims, however, remain unverified by the police.
The incident has cast a dark shadow over the Ajaokuta Division and the wider Kogi State Police Command. As detectives dig deeper into what drove a serving officer to such a deadly act against a colleague—and then himself—questions linger about the pressures, personal conflicts and access to lethal weapons within the force.
Further updates are expected as the SCID investigation progresses.
