Manchester United’s turbulent season has plunged deeper into crisis following a disastrous 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, leaving manager Michael Carrick fighting for his job.
The pressure on Carrick intensified significantly after captain Bruno Fernandes liked a cryptic social media post about “loyalty” less than 24 hours after being dropped to the bench. The Portuguese midfielder was axed from the starting lineup for the clash at Old Trafford following his outspoken criticism of the coaching staff’s tactics in the wake of a 4-1 Champions League hammering by Como.
The Instagram post liked by Fernandes featured the caption: “Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care,” accompanied by a clip from the animated film A Tale of Momentum and Inertia. Although the “like” was swiftly removed, it has added fuel to reports of a fractured dressing room.
United currently sit 16th in the Premier League table, managing just two wins in 12 games since Carrick was appointed on a permanent two-year deal over the summer. The club hierarchy held emergency crisis talks following Sunday’s humbling defeat, though remarkably, supporters inside Old Trafford continued to chant Carrick’s name throughout the match.
Addressing the crowd and the media after the game, Carrick insisted that his post-match walk around the pitch was not a farewell.
”It wasn’t a farewell from me,” Carrick said. “I probably didn’t really expect that off the supporters, if I’m honest… It’s a tough situation, there’s no hiding from it. What it looks like and what’s next, I really don’t know.”
The manager’s predicament has sparked fierce debate among former Old Trafford stars. Gary Neville launched a blistering attack on Fernandes on his Sky Sports podcast, branding the captain an “excuse merchant” for publicly questioning team tactics.
”Bruno can’t press. To come out and whinge after the game about the manager’s tactics… read the room, Bruno,” Neville said. “He’s gone and basically thrown his manager under the bus the week after [Lisandro] Martinez did the same. They weren’t singing for Bruno Fernandes to come on today. They’re backing Michael Carrick.”
Conversely, central defender Harry Maguire threw his weight behind the beleaguered manager, calling on his team-mates to take accountability.
”At the moment we’re not doing enough as players,” Maguire admitted. “Michael turned our season on its head last year… We have got to find something, question yourself, look in the mirror.”
Meanwhile, former United defender Ashley Young offered a damning assessment of the squad’s attitude, accusing the players of giving up and failing to fight for their manager. With boardroom discussions ongoing, United face a monumental task to rescue their domestic campaign before the situation spirals completely out of control.
