Eight months after a 61-year-old retired teacher was found dead in the toilet of her Abeokuta home, Ogun State Police have arrested a man who has confessed to hacking her to death with a cutlass in a dispute over money she allegedly held for him.
Mrs Adedotun Adeteju Oluwaseun, popularly known as Mama Teacher, was killed at her residence in Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude, on Friday, 27 February 2026 — just a day after celebrating her retirement with former colleagues. Her body was discovered the next day inside the toilet.
The principal suspect, Alhaji Saburi Lateef Ayinde, popularly called Oki-Ocean (or OKI-OCEAN), was arrested on 19 October 2026 after the case was transferred from Bode-Olude Division to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Eleweran.
In a confessional video obtained by media houses, Ayinde gave a detailed account of the killing. He claimed he had entrusted ₦3.45 million to the retired teacher for safekeeping and that she had promised to lend him an additional ₦1.55 million (bringing the total to ₦5 million) so he could buy a car. He said he had repeatedly asked for the money but received unsatisfactory answers.

On the evening of 27 February, around 6 p.m., he went to her house to demand an explanation. According to him, the discussion soured when he insisted she return his money if she was no longer willing to provide the loan. Mama Teacher allegedly became angry, ordered him out and threatened to shout. He followed her towards the toilet, where he spotted a cutlass on the ground
“I held it and asked her to give me my money. As she was about coming out, I drew her back and I macheted her with the cutlass. I macheted her neck, hand, laps and she fell and I carried her, placing her on the toilet seat,” he said in the confession.

Ayinde claimed he lingered in the house because a neighbour was outside and he did not want to be seen leaving. He also admitted taking the victim’s unlocked mobile phone — a decision that later helped detectives track him down. Police said the stolen phone provided the breakthrough that led to his arrest nearly eight months after the murder.
Preliminary police findings indicate the victim was allegedly strangled as well as attacked with a machete during the altercation. Detectives are still working to fully corroborate the suspect’s account and establish all the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi confirmed the arrest and said the suspect would be charged to court once investigations are concluded. Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni commended the officers for their persistence and professionalism. The command urged residents to be careful about whom they trust with money and warned against taking the law into their own hands.
Some reports identified the victim as a retired staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), possibly a confidential secretary. The precise nature of the financial arrangement and whether any money has been recovered remain subjects of ongoing investigation.
The arrest brings a significant development after months of uncertainty for the family of Mama Teacher. The final determination of guilt, however, rests with the courts.
