In a continent often left behind by Silicon Valley’s one-size-fits-all artificial intelligence, a 14-year-old boy from Burkina Faso has quietly built something different: an AI that does not merely answer questions but walks users all the way to the finish line of their real-life goals.
His name is Chérif Kounta. The teenager, founder of the small structure Alpha IA, has released FasoNova — an artificial intelligence designed specifically for Burkinabè and African realities rather than Western templates. The platform is already live at fasonova.vercel.app and is drawing attention across the region and beyond.
Kounta’s journey with technology began unusually early. At the age of four, his father returned from a trip with a tablet that sparked an enduring passion. By ten he had coded an interactive calendar. At eleven he developed TruFinder, an AI tool aimed at combating disinformation. At thirteen he began work on FasoNova, balancing schoolwork with late-night coding sessions supported only by his parents’ material and financial help. There has been no outside funding.
What sets FasoNova apart is its “mission mode.” Instead of stopping at a reply, the AI accompanies users from the first idea to concrete completion. An aspiring entrepreneur who wants to open a small telecommunications shop with a capital of one million CFA francs (about $1,710) can receive budget estimates, a shopping list of necessary products, and suggestions for finding suppliers. Students who submit exercises are not handed the answer; the system first explains the proper method before checking their work. Kounta has also prioritised local relevance, drawing on publicly available resources so the AI better reflects African languages, culture and everyday practices.
Privacy is treated as non-negotiable. User data is encrypted and stored on private cloud servers. It is never used to train other models, never sold, and remains inaccessible even to the creator himself.
The name itself carries a message. “Faso” refers to the homeland; “Nova,” from Italian, means new. Kounta has said the project was inspired by a speech from President Ibrahim Traoré stressing that everything in the country must move faster. FasoNova, in his view, is one contribution to that acceleration — a new technology for a new Faso.
For now the tool remains web-only; it has not yet reached the Google Play Store. Kounta is actively seeking partners — universities, research centres and fellow developers — to refine and expand it. In a region hungry for digital solutions that speak its own language and respect its own constraints, a 14-year-old has already delivered a working prototype. The question now is how far Africa will carry it.
