A police officer, ASP Rotimi Richard Ajayi, has been detained after allegedly shooting and killing a 26-year-old security guard, Ayineka Ayomide Daniel, at TSL Halogen Company in Itori, Ogun State, when the guard went to wake him during a suspected robbery.
The incident, which occurred on October 14, 2026, has sparked conflicting accounts and a demand for justice from the deceased’s family.
THE SHOOTING
According to multiple accounts, at approximately 2 a.m., two security guards—Ayomide, a civilian guard, and another colleague, suspected that armed robbers had entered the company’s premises.
They went to wake ASP Ajayi, who was on duty as a Mobile Police officer but was reportedly asleep.
According to the surviving guard, who is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital for gunshot wounds to both hands, the next thing that happened was that the police officer opened fire.
“I saw it, my brother was shot in the neck,” said Miss Ayineka Folashade, the deceased’s younger sister. “I was the one that went to see him with my father’s younger brother. It was in the neck that he was shot” .The second guard was shot twice in the hands but survived.
THE CONFLICTING ACCOUNTS
A staff member of TSL Halogen, Mr. Abayomi, offered a different narrative, describing the shooting as an “accidental discharge.”
“It was just an accidental discharge,” he said. “The two of them are security guards; the policeman was detailed to the location, while the security guard also works at that particular place”. “So, when they suspected that there was an intruder, it was even the deceased that went to call the police officer. So, in the process of them trying to combat the intruder, it was the security guard that was shot”.
However, the family’s account is starkly different.
The father of the deceased, Mr. Ayineka Oluwashola, said the family was initially told that his son was fighting with a friend and had been injured.
“They said the MOPOL and civilian guard that were working in that company, that is the MOPOL that shot them,” he said. “So they said in the night, armed robbers entered their working place. So they had to go and wake the MOPOL that was asleep already. Immediately they woke the MOPOL, they said he began shooting them. He shot my son in the neck; the other guy, he shot him in his two hands”.
The surviving guard reportedly told the family that no armed robbers were caught that night, and that it was their attempt to wake the sleeping officer that prompted the shooting.
“He said that the police wanted to kill two of them,” Mr. Oluwashola said. “He said that the officer said if he should kill them, the police would say it was the armed robber that killed them” .
THE INVESTIGATION
The case has been transferred from Itori Police Station to the Eleweran Police Headquarters in Abeokuta for investigation.
The officer is said to be in detention at Eleweran.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police from Zone 2 has directed a thorough investigation. The Ogun State Police Command did not respond to requests for comment.
Its spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, is yet to respond to a text message seeking confirmation of the incident .
THE FAMILY’S GRIEF
Ayomide had celebrated his 26th birthday on October 11, 2026. Three days later, he was dead.
The family buried him without an autopsy because his body had swollen. The company where he worked has not reached out to the family since the incident and did not send any representative when he was buried.
“I was even the one calling them for the death certificate,” Ms. Folashade said.
WHY IT MATTERS
The death of Ayineka Ayomide Daniel is a tragedy that raises serious questions about the conduct of security personnel assigned to protect lives and property.
If the family’s account is accurate, a police officer sleeping on duty opened fire on the very people who came to alert him to a potential robbery. If the company’s account is accurate, a tragic accident occurred during an operation to confront intruders.
