SUNYANI, Ghana — A sinister internet fraud ring operating out of the Bono Region has been blown wide open by the Ghana Police Service, following the dramatic rescue of a 21-year-old Nigerian man subjected to a violent initiation.
The sweep took place in Kotokrom, a quiet suburb within the Sunyani West Municipality, after a rapid response by local law enforcement dismantled what authorities describe as a transnational cyber-crime cell.

A Cry in the Afternoon
The operation was triggered on the afternoon of October 4, 2026, when a distress call alerted a regional police patrol team to an active assault unfolding inside a residence. Arriving at the scene around 4:30 p.m., officers found 21-year-old Godstime Umukoro battered, bruised, and bearing severe marks of physical trauma across his body.

Eight individuals present at the residence were immediately taken into custody. Investigators later revealed that the brutal beating was not a random act of violence, but a calculated “initiation rite” into the murky world of cyber fraud. According to police debriefs, the suspects unashamedly defended the torture, telling officers that they were merely subjecting Umukoro to the exact same hazing process they had endured before joining the syndicate.

The Yemeni War-Front Scam
Subsequent intelligence gathering and preliminary interrogations peeled back layers of a sophisticated online scam operation. Police identified the mastermind behind the ring as one Nwachukwu King Augustine, who allegedly brought the young recruits into Ghana under false pretenses to act as his operational foot soldiers.

According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the syndicate specialized in romance scams and digital identity deception. Operating from their Sunyani West base, the group systematically harvested downloaded photographs of foreign military personnel. Posing online as soldiers actively deployed on the front lines in war-torn Yemen, the fraudsters manipulated unsuspecting victims into building emotional attachments before swindling them out of substantial sums of money. Stolen funds were reportedly funneled directly into centralized accounts controlled by their fugitive boss.

Suspects Named
Police have officially published the identities of the eight detained suspects:
- Peter Mbam, 24
- Godwin Moses, 26
- Humble Oweifah, 18
- Osas Ogbemudia, 30
- Samuel Aisosa, 22
- Ashile Godbess, 24
- Alexander Uyuo, 30
- Patrick Romans, 25
The Bono Regional Police Command has lauded the local community for their vigilance and swift reporting, which ultimately saved Umukoro from further injury. While local courts have begun remanding the suspects as inquiries deepen, security agencies have reiterated their intolerance for cross-border cyber criminality and domestic violence.
