RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has promised an uncompromising military retaliation following a devastating wave of cross-border strikes orchestrated by Yemen’s Houthi movement that left 18 people dead and paralyzed operations at the kingdom’s primary aviation hub.
Speaking at the World Petroleum Congress in Riyadh, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman delivered a stern warning to the insurgent group, emphasizing that national infrastructure and resilience have been severely tested.
”The events of recent weeks are serious. Our response must be equally serious,” Prince Abdulaziz told international delegates.
Escalating Violence at King Khalid International Airport
The crisis peaked on Saturday when a heavy missile strike targeted King Khalid International Airport, killing 13 people—including foreign nationals—and injuring hundreds. Classified as the deadliest assault on Saudi soil in over a decade, the attack caught travelers and Muslim pilgrims unawares in the departure terminals.
Chilling CCTV footage released by the Saudi Media Ministry showed plumes of thick black smoke and panic erupting inside the concourse as a sudden blast tore through the building, showering passengers with burning shrapnel and debris.
The aggression continued into Sunday with subsequent projectile strikes hitting Terminal 4, compounding the casualty count and forcing aviation authorities to extend a total suspension of all flights through at least mid-week.
Regional Aftershocks and Geopolitical Fallout
Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the multi-pronged assault, stating it was retaliation for ongoing military campaigns led by the Saudi coalition in western Yemen.
The sustained aerial assaults have sent shockwaves across the Middle East:
- Aviation Paralysis: King Khalid International Airport remains shut down, disrupting hundreds of daily commercial flights and stranding travelers.
- Global Energy Jitters: Because the attacks coincide with major energy summits in the capital, crude markets have experienced heightened volatility over security risks to regional oil infrastructure.
- International Condemnation: Allies have rallied behind Riyadh, with neighboring Gulf states calling for unified defense cooperation, while Western powers monitor the deteriorating security environment.
As security forces probe how the incoming projectiles bypassed layered air defenses, Riyadh’s impending counter-offensive threatens to dismantle fragile regional stability and re-ignite intense warfare across the southern border.
