Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of Akwa Ibom State University, has died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State, after allegedly being given fake drugs for a headache.
The Etimbuk Daniel NYSC camp death has prompted the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to demand a thorough investigation.
THE INCIDENT
Daniel reportedly complained of a headache at the orientation camp and was given medication. However, his condition allegedly worsened after he took the drugs.
According to NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, Daniel subsequently requested to be taken to a hospital, but the approval for his transfer came too late. He reportedly died before he could receive further medical attention.
Afeez further claimed that a doctor later identified the medication administered to Daniel as fake.
“We were further informed that the doctor later identified the drugs administered to him as fake. These are deeply troubling allegations that require a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his tragic death,” he said.
NANS REACTS
Afeez said he received the news with shock and described Daniel’s death as a painful loss to the student community. “I received with rude shock the news of the death of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University, who reportedly passed away at the NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State,” he said.
He said the reported circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death raised serious questions that must be addressed to prevent similar tragedies.
“These are deeply troubling allegations that require a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his tragic death,” Afeez stated.
He extended his condolences to Daniel’s family, friends, colleagues, Akwa Ibom State University and the wider student community.
“As a student community, we are in mourning at this difficult moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Akwa Ibom State University community,” the statement added. “May God grant his family and the entire student community the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
THE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
The circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death have raised questions about the safety of medication administered at orientation camps and the procedures for securing emergency medical attention.
The allegations concerning the drugs and the reported delay in accessing medical care have not been independently verified.
NANS has called for a thorough investigation to establish what happened and determine the circumstances that led to Daniel’s death.
WHY IT MATTERS
Every year, thousands of young Nigerians report to NYSC orientation camps across the country. They are required to participate in physical activities, live in shared accommodation and rely on camp medical facilities for basic care.
If the allegations in Daniel’s case are substantiated, they raise serious concerns about the quality of medical care available at camps and the speed with which emergencies are handled.
