Nollywood actress Shaffy Bello has said she has no desire to leave Nigeria, pushing back against the “japa” wave that has seen many Nigerians emigrate in search of better opportunities abroad.
Speaking in an interview, Bello said Nigeria remains home and that she is committed to building her career and life here.
THE JAPA CONTEXT”
Japa” — Yoruba slang for “to run, escape”, has become a defining phenomenon of the past decade. Thousands of Nigerians, particularly young professionals, have relocated to the UK, Canada, the US and Australia, driven by economic hardship, insecurity and the search for better wages.
The trend has drained talent from key sectors including health, education, technology and entertainment.
A COUNTER-NARRATIVE
Bello’s decision to stay is part of a counter-narrative among some Nigerian public figures who argue that emigration, while understandable, is not the only response to national challenges.
Her comments will resonate with those who believe in contributing to Nigeria’s development despite its difficulties — and with those who simply cannot or will not leave.
WHY IT MATTERS
The japa phenomenon is not merely a personal choice. It is a barometer of national confidence. When skilled professionals leave in large numbers, the country loses the human capital it needs to develop. When public figures choose to stay, they send a signal that Nigeria is worth investing in.
Bello’s statement is a small but symbolic contribution to that conversation. ValidViewNetwork reports that Bello continues to work actively in Nollywood.
