“YOU ARE FUNDING PUTIN’s WAR”: BORIS JOHNSON SLAMS TRUMP

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has launched a scathing attack on the United States over its decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel, describing the move as “sickening” and “ridiculous.”

Johnson accused President Donald Trump of effectively funding Vladimir Putin’s war effort by allowing Russian diesel to flow to global markets.

THE OUTBURST

Johnson’s comments add a prominent British voice to the criticism already levelled by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who called the diesel deal “a weak decision by strong partners.”

The former prime minister’s intervention reflects deep unease among European allies about Washington’s pivot toward Moscow as midterm elections approach.

THE FUNDING ARGUMENT

Critics of the diesel deal argue that any revenue flowing to Russia strengthens its capacity to wage war against Ukraine.

Oil and gas exports are the backbone of Russia’s economy, and sanctions were designed to choke that revenue.

Supporters of the deal, including Trump, argue that the diesel release is a necessary response to soaring US fuel prices and that the temporary licence expires in April 2027.

THE TRANSATLANTIC SPLIT

The episode has exposed a widening gap between the US and its European allies on Russia policy. The UK and EU have maintained sanctions. The US has eased them.

Johnson’s remarks will resonate with European leaders who fear Washington is abandoning the coalition it helped build.

REALPOLITIK VS PRINCIPLE

The dispute is a classic illustration of the tension between realpolitik and principle in international relations.

Trump’s calculation is domestic: American voters care about diesel prices, not Ukraine’s borders. European leaders’ calculation is strategic: allowing Russia to profit from energy exports while it bombs Ukrainian cities undermines the entire sanctions architecture.

Both cannot be right. And the outcome will shape the war’s trajectory. ValidViewNetwork reports that the diesel licence remains in effect until April 2027.
