Kwankwasiyya Accuses Kano Government of Targeting Opposition Projects

A road project has become the latest battlefield in Kano’s political struggle.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has accused the Kano State Government of targeting opposition politicians and obstructing development projects facilitated by lawmakers outside the ruling political camp.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the movement’s spokesperson, Dr Habib Mai Lemo, alleged that a pattern of political intimidation was emerging in the state. He cited reported suspensions involving councillors, alleged threats against political commentators and attempts to suspend or relocate federal constituency projects.

One project specifically highlighted is a road project intended for communities within the Ungogo/Minjibir Federal Constituency.

Mai Lemo challenged the government to explain what he described as “extraordinary administrative intervention” in projects facilitated by opposition lawmakers. The allegation is political and remains disputed.

The Kano State Government would therefore need to explain the reasons behind any suspension, relocation or intervention in the project before the allegation can be established as fact.

There may be legitimate technical, planning, environmental, contractual or administrative reasons for government intervention in a project.

There may also be political disagreement.

The answer must come from official records. This distinction is important because public infrastructure belongs to the people, not to the politicians who facilitate it.

A road does not become an opposition road because an opposition lawmaker helped secure it.

At the same time, a government has a responsibility to ensure that projects within its territory meet applicable standards and legal requirements.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the dispute should therefore be settled through documents rather than political accusations.

If a project was unlawfully obstructed, the affected parties have lawful channels to challenge the decision.

If the intervention was justified, the government should explain the basis clearly.

No side should resort to threats, intimidation or self-help. Development must remain larger than party politics, and political disagreement must remain within constitutional and legal boundaries.

That is the only sustainable way to resolve the Kano dispute.
