Imagine driving along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at night and suddenly finding a huge construction machine extending towards the road.
That is the danger motorists around the Magboro, Gideon Bus Stop and Kara-Ibafo axis have been facing.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Ogun State’s traffic management agency has begun moves to remove an abandoned piling rig and an accidented truck from the expressway.
The piling rig reportedly slipped from its lowbed trailer around the Gideon Bus Stop/Kara-Ibafo section, with part of its structure extending towards the road.
The accidented truck was also left abandoned by the roadside.
TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed that an operation team had been deployed to facilitate their removal.
He said: “The DC led an operation team to ensure the quick evacuation of an amphibious crane and an accidented truck parked/abandoned at Magboro section, along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway inbound Lagos route.”
TRACE also deployed personnel to monitor the affected area pending the evacuation.
The agency said the police division in Ibafo and the manager responsible for the piling rig had promised to expedite the removal process.
The danger is obvious.
A heavy machine positioned close to a busy highway can force motorists into sudden manoeuvres, especially at night when visibility is reduced.
A minor obstruction can quickly become a major accident when thousands of vehicles are moving through the same corridor.
This is why road safety cannot be treated as a matter of enforcement alone. Equipment owners, contractors, transport operators and public agencies all have responsibilities when heavy machinery or damaged vehicles are left on public roads.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the immediate priority is to remove the obstruction before another tragedy occurs.
The response is welcome, but prevention remains the better form of road safety.
No motorist should have to discover a giant construction machine in the darkness before learning that it has been abandoned.
The road must be made safe, the equipment removed and responsibility established where negligence is found.
