Nigeria’s opposition parties have begun laying the groundwork for a single presidential candidate ahead of 2027, but key contenders Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi were notably absent from the Abuja summit, raising questions about the viability of the coalition.
ValidViewNetwork gathered that Nigeria’s opposition parties on Monday, August 31, 2026, began laying the groundwork for a single presidential candidate and a four-year transition programme ahead of the 2027 elections.
The initiative was unveiled at the Summit of Nigeria’s Opposition Political Parties, organised by the G100 and the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
Six opposition parties participated in the meeting: the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Notable Absences
However, two of the leading opposition presidential contenders, Atiku Abubakar of the ADC and Peter Obi of the NDC were absent from the summit.
Their absence was not officially explained at the meeting.
Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu, said the former vice-president remained committed to the opposition unity project.
“His Excellency’s absence was unavoidable and should not be mischievously interpreted as a boycott or lack of commitment to opposition unity,” Shaibu said.
The Framework for Unity
Despite the absences, presidential candidates from the PRP, SDP and APM, Donald Duke, Adewole Adebayo and Moses Olusoji, participated in the meeting, alongside national officers, lawmakers and other opposition figures.
Salihu Mohammed Lukman, G100 leader and former APC National Vice Chairman, said the initiative aimed to prevent a repeat of the fragmentation that characterised the 2023 presidential election.
He argued that opposition parties must first agree on the rules and structure of cooperation before negotiating positions and personalities. “Rules before outcomes. Table before seats,” he said.
