Ex-Guardian Editor Debo Adesina Battles Stroke, Family Appeals to Tinubu Over $205k Medical Debt

​The family of veteran journalist and former Nigerian Ambassador to Togo, Adebowale (Debo) Adesina, has made an impassioned plea to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for urgent financial intervention as the former diplomat battles a massive stroke in a Canadian hospital.

​Adesina, a towering figure in Nigerian media who formerly served as the Editor-in-Chief and Chief Operating Officer of The Guardian, fell critically ill weeks after arriving in Canada.

​In a personal letter addressed to President Tinubu, his wife, Mrs. Oluyemisi Debo-Adesina, detailed the harrowing ordeal, noting that her husband travelled to North America on June 24, 2026, to visit his family. On July 9, 2026, he suffered a debilitating stroke that changed the course of their lives.

​According to the correspondence, Adesina spent over a month receiving critical care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Trillium Hospital in Mississauga before being transferred to Etobicoke General Hospital, where he remains hospitalized.

​While offering a glimmer of hope, Mrs. Debo-Adesina noted that her husband is gradually emerging from a prolonged induced coma. However, his medical condition remains extremely grave, necessitating continuous high-level monitoring and intensive care.

​The protracted hospitalization has translated into a crushing financial crisis for the family. As of August 24, 2026, outstanding medical expenses had crossed the CAD $205,000 threshold, with costs compounding daily. Compounding the distress, hospital authorities have reportedly raised concerns regarding the continuation of his treatment layout unless immediate financial arrangements are sorted.
