US to Pull 200 Troops From Nigeria, Citing Mission Gains

WASHINGTON, D.C./ABUJA

The Pentagon is preparing to withdraw roughly 200 American troops from Nigeria by late September, closing out a counterterrorism deployment that US and Nigerian officials say delivered results well beyond its modest size, even as attacks by armed groups continue across parts of the country.

No individual is named or accused of wrongdoing in this development; the story concerns a military drawdown decision by the United States government, made in coordination with Nigerian authorities, rather than any disciplinary or legal action.

How the deployment began

The troops were sent to northeastern Nigeria in February 2026, following an agreement between Washington and Abuja to deepen counterterrorism cooperation, and after public pressure from US President Donald Trump over attacks on Christian communities in parts of the country.

According to reporting by The New York Times, the deployment focused on intelligence sharing, training and combat support rather than establishing any permanent US combat presence.

The operation that changed the calculus

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show the turning point came in May 2026, when a joint operation killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, then second-in-command of the Islamic State group active in the Lake Chad Basin.

AFRICOM commander General Dagvin Anderson said afterward that the strike had dealt a significant blow to the group’s leadership structure both regionally and globally, and that Washington had already begun quietly pulling back troops in the operation’s aftermath.

Nigeria, he added, had remained “very active” since, working to choke off the group’s remaining operational capacity.

Washington’s pitch: small footprint, big results

AFRICOM spokesperson Col. Becky Heyse described the Nigeria mission as a possible template for future US operations across Africa, calling it proof that a “tailored, temporary footprint” can still deliver meaningful security outcomes.

American officials told The New York Times the departure of the larger contingent will not end the broader US-Nigeria security partnership: smaller teams of military trainers and intelligence analysts are expected to remain in the country indefinitely.

A harder reality on the ground

That framing sits uneasily against Nigeria’s continuing security picture. In the days surrounding the withdrawal announcement, gunmen killed more than two dozen people, including an imam, in the northwest, at least 25 people died in a separate attack on a village in the country’s centre, and militants struck a military base in the northeast.

Analysts note the country’s insecurity has never had a single cause: Ladd Serwat, Africa senior analyst at the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), has previously told TheCable that Islamist militant violence accounts for only a modest share of Nigeria’s overall violence, alongside banditry, farmer-herder clashes, and militia activity, a complexity Nigerian officials themselves have repeatedly stressed.

What comes next

The drawdown also lands weeks after a second round of talks in Washington under a joint working group established to address the protection of Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, and follows a July exchange of letters between Trump and Tinubu affirming their shared security priorities.

As the withdrawal proceeds toward its late-September completion, the real test, security watchers say, will be whether Nigerian forces can hold onto the operational gains the joint mission produced, long after the larger American footprint has gone.
