Wike Blasts Amaechi: ‘You Ousted Jonathan,Now Seek South-South Votes’

​The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched a blistering critique against former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, labeling him a political liability completely devoid of genuine electoral clout in Rivers State and the wider South-South geopolitical zone.

​Speaking during a recent media engagement, Wike scrutinized Amaechi’s recent political positioning, questioning the rationale behind his emergence as a prominent choice for high-profile national tickets. According to the FCT minister, such political elevation defies logic based on electoral performance and points more toward financial maneuvering rather than democratic pulling power.

​“I am sure the only factor that has been used to choose Rotimi Amaechi may be financial because the former governor lacks the capacity to deliver votes,” Wike asserted.

​A History of Electoral Deficits

​Backing his claims with historical electoral data, Wike argued that Amaechi has consistently failed to deliver decisive wins in Rivers State across multiple election cycles, despite occupying influential national positions.

• ​2011 Elections: Marked the last time Amaechi won a presidential cycle in the state, a feat achieved while Wike served as his Director of Campaign.
• ​2015 Elections: Amaechi served as the Director-General for Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign while sitting as a sitting governor, yet failed to secure the mandatory 25% constitutional threshold in Rivers State.

• ​2019 Elections: Despite operating as a “Super Minister” and retaining his role as campaign DG, the progressive ticket again missed the 25% benchmark locally.

• ​2023 Elections: Even with subsequent political alignments, the voting outcome lingered beneath expectations, failing to muster even 15% support.

​The ‘Jonathan Factor’ and South-South Trust

​Wike reserved his sharpest criticisms for Amaechi’s historical opposition to former President Goodluck Jonathan. He argued that the South-South region has neither forgotten nor forgiven the role played by the former governor in terminating a regional presidency.

​“A South-South person wanted to go for a second term. You were proud you kicked him out. Now, will South-South be happy for you to be Vice President? You think that people have forgotten?” Wike queried, casting serious doubts on any prospective block support from the region for Amaechi’s national aspirations.
