ABUJA — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly dismissed insinuations that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has been sidelined from the state’s political architecture, insisting that the governor remains an integral and active pillar of the ruling camp.
Speaking during a high-profile media chat in Abuja, Wike addressed public speculations regarding Fubara’s quiet disposition, clarifying that a low profile does not equate to exclusion or political friction.
Active Role in 2027 Agenda
Wike maintained that Governor Fubara is fully committed to the objectives of the Rainbow Coalition, playing an active role in mobilizing support for the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The FCT Minister pointed to a recent high-level strategic meeting hosted by Fubara at his official residence, which drew key political stakeholders, as clear proof of the governor’s active stake in the state’s political direction.
”Do you know what it takes to hold a meeting in his house? For everybody to be there?” Wike queried, stressing that Fubara’s primary focus is ensuring that their collective political family retains its influence and power. He added that campaign committee lists submitted for Rivers State position Fubara among the primary leaders.
Blaming External Actors for Past Tensions
Reflecting on the well-publicized political tensions that previously rocked Rivers State, the former governor did not mince words, blaming external forces and ungrateful elements—including specific opposition governors—for trying to exploit the situation for selfish political mileage.
Wike asserted that despite external attempts to drive a wedge between them through malicious narratives, mutual reconciliation has prevailed, cementing a united front under the umbrella of the Rainbow Coalition. According to him, the coalition was strategically designed to harmonize diverse political tendencies across party lines—incorporating members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other groups—to champion a unified agenda under President Tinubu.
Managing Peculiarities and Political Strategy
Defending the coalition’s arrangement regarding offices and candidacies, Wike noted that the structure respects local political peculiarities without sacrificing team solidarity.
”When you talk about politicians that agree to form an umbrella, the umbrella does not mean that all the candidates will be one party,” Wike explained. “We look at the peculiarities of areas, and say, listen, all of us are together and all of us are supporters of Mr President.”
While addressing future political speculations concerning the governor’s post-tenure trajectory, Wike maintained an optimistic outlook on Fubara’s standing, while noting that executive appointments remain strictly within the constitutional purview of the presidency.
