JOHANNESBURG — A South African attorney who publicly performed grief on social media after the brutal murder of his romantic partner has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Thubelihle Sbonakaliso Mpisi learned his fate on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, when the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg handed down a life sentence for the murder of Mahlako Malebo Rabalao. In addition to the murder conviction, Mpisi received concurrent sentences for malicious injury to property and defeating the administration of justice.
The harrowing case dates back to March 9, 2023, when emergency responders discovered Rabalao’s charred remains inside her Mercedes-Benz near her residence in Midrand. Rabalao, a 26-year-old IT specialist just days away from her 27th birthday, shared a home with Mpisi and was the mother of their three-year-old son.
According to testimonies presented during the trial, Rabalao had confided in close friends and relatives about her plans to end the relationship and move out of the shared apartment. Prosecutors established that this intention served as the critical motive for the attack.
Investigators revealed that in the immediate aftermath of the horrific discovery, Mpisi took to social media to broadcast grief and shock over the tragedy, attempting to deflect suspicion. However, a meticulous four-month police investigation dismantled the facade. Authorities tracked him to KwaZulu-Natal, where he was apprehended on July 28, 2023. He remained behind bars throughout the legal proceedings after abandoning his bail application.
Senior State Advocate Michelle Bayat acknowledged during the trial that extensive thermal damage prevented medical examiners from pinpointing the exact clinical cause of death. Despite this, the prosecution built an airtight case using circumstantial evidence. Cellphone tower logs, rigorous forensic data, expert testimonies, and Mpisi’s suspicious behavior before and after the crime proved conclusively that Rabalao was killed before her body and vehicle were set ablaze to obliterate evidence.
The presiding judge accepted the state’s reconstruction of events, delivering a definitive ruling that closes a painful chapter for the grieving family of the young IT professional.
