Dr. Bolajoko Bayo- Ajayi, President and Chairman of Council of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN), has issued a strong admonition to Nigerians to stop using the increasingly popular phrase, “Nigeria has happened to me.” She delivered this message on Sunday, July 26, 2026, while speaking as a Distinguished Discussant at the second edition of ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse, where she addressed the psychological and reputational damage caused by negative national expressions.

In her remarks, Dr. Bolajoko explained that the phrase “Nigeria has happened to me” has become a harmful shorthand for frustration, disappointment, or personal setbacks. It is often used when individuals encounter poor service delivery, bureaucratic delays, insecurity, or economic hardship. The expression is used when people lose money or properties due to sudden policy changes or any frustrating encounter that reinforces the belief that the system is stacked against them. According to her, while these experiences may be real, the expression itself is a form of self sabotage, reinforcing a narrative that Nigeria is inherently doomed and incapable of progress. She warned that such language gradually conditions citizens to expect failure, normalises pessimism, and contributes to the country’s growing culture of national demarketing.

Dr. Bolajoko spoke within the broader context of the Discourse theme: “National Demarketing and the Nigerian Psyche: Resetting Nigeria’s Public Mindset.” She emphasised that Nigerians must become conscious of how their words shape national identity, global perception, and collective morale. As a leading marketing and reputation expert, she argued that branding is not only about products—it is also about nations, and Nigeria cannot build a strong national brand if its citizens consistently speak destructively about it.

Dr. Bolajoko Bayo-Ajayi is a distinguished marketing and management professional whose career spans over 27 years of leading multi-billion-naira brands, shaping national narratives, and driving transformative growth across industries. A Fellow of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (FNIMN) and Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (fnipr), she stands at the intersection of strategic marketing, national branding, ethical communication, and reputation leadership.

A consummate professional, Dr. Bayo-Ajayi has worked with some of the world’s most iconic multinationals, including Guinness Nigeria/Diageo, Coca-Cola, and Sygen Pharma, where she led high-impact marketing, brand management, and corporate communication portfolios. Her work has shaped consumer behaviour, strengthened brand equity, and delivered market-shifting results across diverse sectors.
Beyond the corporate boardroom, Dr. Bayo-Ajayi is a respected communication strategist, leadership coach, and public enlightenment advocate. Her passion for human development, mindset transformation, and behavioural change has positioned her as a leading voice on how nations — not just brands — can rebuild confidence, reshape narratives, and inspire collective progress.

The Monthly Global Discourse, organised by ValidViewNetwork Media, is a knowledge to action platform designed to bridge global perspectives with local realities. Each edition convenes experts to address national issues through evidence based dialogue, public enlightenment, and solution driven engagement. The maiden edition, held on June 28, 2026, featured Prof. Labode Popoola FFAN, while the July edition brought together national reputation leaders to confront Nigeria’s rising culture of negativity.
The third edition of the Monthly Global Discourse, scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026, will place another important topical issue on the front burner as ValidViewNetwork continues its commitment to evidence-based civic engagement and mindset renewal.

ValidViewNetwork Limited founded by Kayode Ogunjobi, stands firmly on three strategic pillars—Media, Consultancy, and Advocacy, all working together to deliver credible news reporting, expert environmental and academic advisory services, and impactful public-interest advocacy. Through this integrated structure, it advances evidence-based communication, sustainable development solutions, institutional strengthening, and community-focused interventions that promote environmental protection, academic excellence, and societal well-being.

In her concluding message, Dr. Bolajoko urged Nigerians to consciously replace destructive expressions with constructive ones. She stressed that while challenges exist, citizens must avoid language that deepens hopelessness or damages national reputation. “Stop saying ‘Nigeria has happened to me,’” she insisted. “Say instead that Nigeria will work for me. Speak hope. Speak possibility. Speak progress.” Her recommendation was clear: Nigerians must stop reinforcing negativity and begin speaking life into their nation.

Her intervention underscores a critical truth: the language citizens use is both a mirror and a mould of national identity. As Nigeria confronts complex social, economic, and institutional challenges, the call to abandon defeatist expressions becomes more than a linguistic correction; it becomes a civic responsibility, ValidViewNetwork reports.
