Nigerians’ Greatest Enemies Are Nigerians, Dr. Ike Neliaku and Dr. Bolajoko Bayo- Ajayi Warn

Nigeria’s greatest challenge may not be insecurity, inflation, or unemployment alone. It may be the stories Nigerians tell about their own country. Nigeria’s battle for global respect will not be won at international summits, investment forums, or diplomatic missions if Nigerians continue to become the country’s harshest critics before the rest of the world.

That powerful message resonated throughout the Second Edition of the ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse, where two of Nigeria’s foremost authorities on reputation management challenged citizens, government, the media, and professionals to abandon destructive narratives and embrace responsible communication capable of restoring confidence in the Nigerian brand.

The experts warned that national demarketing has become one of the greatest threats to Nigeria’s image, investment potential, and global competitiveness.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the virtual discourse, held on Sunday, July 26, 2026, examined the thought – provoking theme, “National Demarketing and the Nigerian Psyche: Resetting Nigeria’s Public Mindset,” bringing together stakeholders from within Nigeria and across the diaspora to interrogate how persistent negative narratives continue to damage the nation’s image, investment prospects, and international competitiveness.

The second edition proudly featured two distinguished national reputation leaders — Dr. Bolajoko Bayo-Ajayi FNIMN, FNIPR, President, National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria and Dr. Ike Neliaku FNIPR, 15^th President, Chairman of Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and a Member of Board , Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management.

The combined expertise of the Distinguished Discussants in strategic marketing, national branding, ethical communication, and reputation management provided deep, authoritative insights that illuminated both the roots of this crisis and the pathways toward a more balanced, confident, and responsible national mindset, ValidViewNetwork reports.  

Together, both Dr. Bolajoko and Dr. Ike challenged Nigeria’s reflexive pessimism head-on, dismantling the forces behind national demarketing, articulated a compelling roadmap for countering national demarketing through responsible communication, ethical leadership, and authentic storytelling.

They lamented  that Nigeria’s reputation challenge extends far beyond external perception and argued that the crisis has become systemic, fuelled by leadership shortcomings, poor communication, ethnic divisions, and the increasing tendency of Nigerians themselves to circulate negative narratives that later become global reference points against their own country.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the discourse identified reflexive pessimism as one of the most dangerous behavioural patterns confronting the nation today. Positive developments are frequently dismissed with suspicion while falsehoods repeated consistently eventually gain acceptance as truth. The experts therefore urged government to communicate policies more transparently and consistently while strengthening civic education that promotes balanced national consciousness.

Another major concern raised during the discourse was the increasing practice of international self-sabotage, where Nigerians consciously or unconsciously reinforce damaging stereotypes at global platforms. Speakers observed that this trend discourages investment, weakens international partnerships, and diminishes confidence in Nigeria’s enormous human and economic potential. Diaspora Nigerians were therefore encouraged to communicate responsibly by presenting balanced and fact-based accounts of national realities rather than amplifying isolated incidents into sweeping national judgements.

The experts also advocated a deliberate shift towards authentic storytelling that projects Nigeria’s genuine strengths, achievements, innovations, and opportunities. They stressed that development communication should become a national responsibility, urging citizens, institutions, and media organisations to assess the nation building impact of every public communication before it is released.

They called for stronger collaboration among government, the media, academia, professional bodies, civil society organisations, and the diaspora to reverse the growing culture of national demarketing. They welcomed the establishment of the Nigeria Reputation Management Group by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations as a significant step towards providing the country with a coordinated framework for safeguarding its global image.

The discourse also challenged the widespread use of self-defeating expressions such as “Nigeria has happened to me,” describing such language as psychologically damaging to national identity. Instead, Nigerians particularly the country’s youthful population were encouraged to embrace constructive patriotism that promotes accountability without reinforcing hopelessness or diminishing national dignity.

The discourse concluded that national demarketing is fundamentally a mindset crisis rather than merely a communication challenge. It called on leaders, professionals, journalists, media practitioners, and citizens both within and outside Nigeria to embrace constructive patriotism, ethical communication, and collective responsibility in rebuilding the country’s reputation. Participants affirmed that Nigeria’s story must ultimately be reclaimed by Nigerians themselves through courage, integrity, and unity.

The second monthly discourse concluded with a resounding affirmation that rebuilding Nigeria’s reputation demands more than government action. It requires every Nigerian, whether at home or abroad, to become an ambassador of truth, hope, integrity, and responsible communication. Experts affirmed that while criticism remains essential in every democracy, it should strengthen the nation rather than weaken it before the global community, VAlidViewNetwork reports.
