ABUJA — In a historic, high-stakes counterterrorism breakthrough, a meticulously coordinated military operation between Nigerian and United States forces has eliminated Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, the top-tier leader of the Islamic State (ISIS) network in West Africa.

The successful strike, which occurred overnight on Friday, May 15, 2026, targeted Al-Manuki’s fortified compound nestled deep within the volatile Lake Chad Basin. Several of his closest lieutenants were also killed in the blitz.

The operational success was first broken late Friday night by US President Donald J. Trump via his Truth Social platform. President Trump lauded the operation as a “flawlessly executed” and “meticulously planned” mission, describing Al-Manuki as the global terror network’s “second in command” who wrongly believed Africa could offer him an impenetrable safe haven.

Hours later, on Saturday morning, Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu released a matching confirmation from the State House in Abuja, hailing the mission as a “significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism.”

A Daring Precision Strike

The raid marks a watershed moment in the long-standing international coalition against regional insurgency. According to defense sources, the joint operation relied heavily on deep-penetration intelligence gathering and advanced aerial assets.

”Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State,” President Tinubu stated. “Early assessments confirm the elimination of the wanted IS senior leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, along with several of his lieutenants.”

Expressing Abuja’s appreciation for the strategic alliance, Tinubu added, “Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives. I extend my sincere gratitude to President Trump for his leadership and unwavering support in this effort.”

Who Was Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki?

Born in Nigeria’s Borno State in 1982, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki (internationally recognized as Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali al-Mainuki) was a seasoned militant with a bloody track record.

Security records show he fought alongside ISIS factions in Libya over a decade ago before returning to the Lake Chad region. Following the 2018 execution of former Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) leader Mamman Nur, Al-Manuki rose sharply through the ranks, spearheading the hardline faction of the group.

In June 2023, the US Department of State officially designated him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), identifying him as a key administrative and financial linchpin for ISIS’s General Directorate of Provinces. US intelligence officials noted that Al-Manuki was actively organizing regional funding networks and plotting hostile operations targeting both domestic and Western interests.

While President Trump declared him the “second in command of ISIS globally,” independent security analysts suggest Al-Manuki’s primary immense influence lay as the operational backbone and deputy commander of ISWAP, running what is considered the global terror network’s most active and well-funded regional franchise.

Shifting Tides in West Africa

The joint strike represents a major strategic pivot for Washington’s policy in the Sahel. Following directives from the White House late last year, the US military expanded its footprint in Nigeria, deploying sophisticated surveillance drones and approximately 200 specialized personnel to provide direct tactical intelligence and training support.

Military spokesperson Samalia Uba confirmed that the strike was the crown jewel of this newly intensified partnership. “The operation has successfully disrupted a violent terrorist network that endangered Nigeria and the broader West African region,” Uba said.

Security experts are already predicting severe operational tremors within the insurgent ranks.

”If confirmed, the killing of Al-Manuki is huge because this is the first time a security agency has killed someone this high in the ranking of ISWAP,” noted Malik Samuel, a senior researcher at Good Governance Africa. “The potential to cause chaos within the group is immense because the operation was carried out right in the heart of ISWAP’s most fortified base.”

In Abuja, President Tinubu concluded his address with high praise for the boots on the ground and a firm warning to remaining insurgent groups: “I commend the personnel involved on both sides for their professionalism and courage, and I look forward to more decisive strikes against all terrorist enclaves across the nation.”
