AKURE – Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has described elder statesman and Afenifere chieftain, Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, as a “moral compass” and a “towering institution” whose contributions to Nigerian literature and political thought remain unparalleled.
Speaking on Saturday at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), during an event marking Arogbofa’s 87th birthday, the Governor joined dignitaries to celebrate the public presentation of the book, Understanding Afenifere: A Journey Through the Yoruba Leadership Organisation, and Arogbofa’s investiture into the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Hall of Fame.
A Pillar of Democratic Ideals
Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that Arogbofa’s life transcends mere longevity, representing a repository of the intellectual and moral values that have shaped the Yoruba political consciousness.
”At 87, we are not merely celebrating the passage of time, but honoring a life that has become an institution in itself,” Aiyedatiwa stated. He lauded the celebrant’s role as the Secretary-General of Afenifere, noting that his consistency and clarity of conviction have been essential to the sustainability of the progressive movement.
The Governor further described elders of Arogbofa’s caliber as the “moral infrastructure” of the state, serving as a vital check on governance. He admitted that the scrutiny of principled leaders like the Basorun has helped maintain integrity within his administration.
Literary Excellence and National Recognition
The event also served as a milestone for the literary community. The ANA Fellowship investiture was described by the Governor as a fitting tribute to Arogbofa’s lifelong dedication to the arts.
In his response, Basorun Arogbofa expressed humility regarding the ANA Leadership Award. “It is not every writer who can receive this,” he remarked, urging the younger generation to embrace literacy and active participation in societal progress. “Read, learn, be eager,” he charged the audience.

A Gathering of Eminence
The ceremony, chaired by former Minister of Defence Kayode Adetokunbo, drew a high-profile audience. Professor Femi Mimiko, who reviewed the new publication, praised it as a “well-researched work” that offers practical insights into the philosophy of progressive governance and social justice.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi; the Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olusegun Odusola (represented); Nigeria’s Ambassador to Russia, Olusola Iji; and the Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji.
