ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart the nation’s capital on Tuesday, March 17, for a high-profile State Visit to the United Kingdom, marking the first such invitation extended to a Nigerian leader in 37 years.

The visit, at the invitation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, is being hailed as a “landmark moment” in Nigeria-UK relations. Beyond the royal pageantry, the trip is anchored by a massive £746 million (approximately 1.4 trillion Naira) infrastructure financing deal aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s vital maritime gateways.

A Royal Welcome at Windsor

The President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will be hosted at Windsor Castle from Wednesday, March 18. This is a historic first; while previous Nigerian leaders have visited the UK, President Tinubu is the first to be formally hosted by the British monarch at the storied Windsor residence.

The itinerary includes:

  • Royal Exhibition: A private viewing of Nigerian artifacts within the Royal Collection.
  • Interfaith Dialogue: Discussions between the King and the President regarding global religious harmony.
  • State Banquet: A formal dinner at Windsor Castle hosted by the Royal Family in honor of the Nigerian delegation.

Economic and Port Infrastructure Focus

At the heart of the diplomatic mission is a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. This session is expected to culminate in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) spanning trade, defense, and investment.

The most significant economic highlight remains the £746 million financing agreement involving UK Export Finance (UKEF) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). The funds are earmarked for the total refurbishment of the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa) and the Tin Can Island Port Complex, aimed at boosting Nigeria’s trade efficiency and maritime security.

High-Powered Delegation

The President is traveling with a robust team of cabinet members and legislative leaders to ensure multi-sectoral engagement. The entourage includes Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, and the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, among others.

While in London, the President will also engage with the Nigerian diaspora and business leaders, reinforcing the role of the “global Nigerian” in the nation’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
