The Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, has convicted and sentenced 12 persons for naira abuse after they were found guilty of spraying banknotes at a party.
The convicts were prosecuted by the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa, who handed down the judgment after they pleaded guilty to the charges.
They are Abimbola Dolapo, Ufuoma Okotie, Samuel Kingsley, Rasaki Ayomide, Ekpmamuku Oghenekewvwe, Abraham Eriata, Favour Onowighose, Karaki Emmanuel Ejioghene, Simeon Sabastine, Valentine Chikeze, Omoyibo Destiny Prince and Akenuwa Clinton Osamudiamen.
The defendants were said to have tampered with the naira by spraying the currency while dancing at a social gathering, an offence contrary to Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
Following their guilty pleas, the court convicted 11 of them to six months’ imprisonment or a fine of N150,000 each, while Osamudiamen was given the option of paying N200,000 instead of serving a six-month jail term.
The convicts also signed undertakings promising to maintain good conduct.
In a related development, the court on Friday, July 17, 2026, ordered the forfeiture of seven luxury vehicles to the Federal Government after they were recovered by the EFCC from convicted internet fraudsters as proceeds of crime.
The vehicles include a Mercedes-Benz GLK, Lexus RX 330, Mercedes-Benz ML, Lexus ES 350, Mercedes-Benz GLKC, Mercedes-Benz GLC and another Mercedes-Benz GLK.
