Nigeria’s healthcare system is facing increasing pressure as medical professionals continue to leave the country. The Federal Government is now looking beyond its borders for part of the solution.
ValidViewNetwork reports that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has unveiled the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative during the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration in Abuja.
The programme seeks to encourage Nigerian medical professionals abroad to support healthcare delivery at home.
Doctor Exodus Raises Concern
More than 16,000 Nigerian doctors have reportedly emigrated within the last five to six years. The figures were presented by the Nigerian Medical Association during several state conferences.
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria estimates that about 55,000 doctors currently serve a population exceeding 220 million. This leaves Nigeria with one doctor for several thousand patients, ValidViewNetwork reports.
Hospitals Face Growing Pressure
The shortage has increased pressure on hospitals across the country.Some patients now wait months or years for non emergency surgeries.
Punch Healthwise reported that some surgery dates have been scheduled as far ahead as 2027 and 2028. Several hospitals have also struggled with reduced numbers of resident doctors, ValidViewNetwork reports.
Brain Drain Extends Beyond Doctors
The migration trend also affects nurses.The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives says about 75,000 nurses have left Nigeria since 2017.Around 15,000 reportedly departed in 2022 alone.
Health experts say the loss continues to stretch healthcare services nationwide.
Governments Have Tried Different Approaches
Nigeria has faced healthcare challenges for decades.Successive governments have introduced reforms to improve the sector.The Basic Health Care Provision Fund entered full implementation in 2018.
The Tinubu administration has now shifted attention toward engaging healthcare professionals living abroad, ValidViewNetwork reports.
Nigeria Joins A Global Challenge
Several countries have experienced medical workforce migration. The Philippines trains nurses for international employment. Ghana and Kenya have also lost healthcare workers to overseas recruitment.
India has expanded medical training to offset physician emigration.
Economic Impact Continues
Nigeria spends more than one billion dollars annually on medical tourism, according to published reports.
Many patients travel abroad for treatments unavailable locally. At the same time, diaspora remittances continue to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economy.

The Federal Government hopes stronger engagement with Nigerian professionals overseas will support healthcare delivery at home.Nigeria’s health sector now faces two urgent tasks.
It must strengthen conditions that encourage healthcare workers to remain while also building meaningful partnerships with those already abroad.
The success of the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative will likely depend not only on the willingness of Nigerian professionals overseas to contribute, but also on sustained investments in better facilities, improved welfare, modern equipment and policies that restore confidence in the country’s healthcare system.
