Wike Fires Back at APC Governors: “I Never Approached You for Any Alliance”

The political argument over the 2027 elections has acquired a new vocabulary: “politically lazy.”

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike used the phrase while responding to APC governors who rejected political arrangements they believe could undermine the party’s interests.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Progressive Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, has maintained that APC governors remain committed to the party’s structure and will not support arrangements capable of weakening the APC or its candidates.

Wike has now rejected that position.Speaking on television, he said: “They are politically lazy. When you have your local problems, don’t use Mr President as your excuse.”

He also challenged the argument that supporting President Bola Tinubu in the presidential election automatically means supporting APC candidates in other elections.Wike said:

“I have said I will support the President and I am still supporting him. What has that got to do with my party?”

He cited the political realities in states such as Anambra, Osun and Abia to argue that a presidential endorsement does not necessarily mean that political parties must abandon their own candidates at other levels.

Wike also insisted that he had never approached APC governors to join his Rainbow Coalition.

“I have never approached APC governors for any Rainbow Coalition.”

The minister further said President Tinubu was aware of his political activities.

The APC governors’ position, however, remains different. Their forum has said it will not support external political arrangements that could undermine Tinubu’s political interests or the electoral prospects of APC candidates.

The disagreement therefore involves more than personal exchanges. It raises a fundamental question about how politicians can support a presidential candidate while remaining members of another political party and continuing to operate within that party’s structures.

The Constitution and electoral laws provide the framework for political association and elections. Individual politicians can express support for candidates, while political parties retain their own structures and legal identities.

The final consequences of these political arrangements will therefore depend not only on speeches but on party decisions, lawful campaign structures and the rules governing the 2027 elections.

For voters, the important task is to separate political rhetoric from formal party decisions and distinguish personal political support from legally recognised electoral structures.
