KADUNA, NIGERIA — Prominent Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has strongly refuted allegations linking him to the perennial security challenges bedeviling the nation. Breaking his silence on the swirling controversies surrounding his past backchannel engagements, the cleric maintained that he remains a peaceful, loyal, and patriotic citizen deeply invested in the growth and stability of Nigeria.
The retired Army Captain and medical doctor clarified his stance during a comprehensive media appearance, which was extensively tracked by the ValidViewNetwork. Speaking with clarity on the motivations behind his previous treks into the dense forests of the Northwest, Gumi explained that his interactions with bandits were never designed to foster or promote criminality. Instead, they were humanitarian interventions aimed at bridging the gap between the state and the aggrieved actors to unravel the root causes of the cross-border violence.
“I have no association or hand, nor have I ever done anything to promote insecurity in Nigeria,” Gumi stated emphatically during the broadcast. “On the contrary, I am a peaceful citizen who loves his country more than anything. That is why I felt it was a duty for me to take the government along to go and see these people who are causing insecurity, and listen to their grievances.”
The Limit of Guns and Bombs
The cleric argued that relying solely on a military offensive will not yield a permanent resolution to the complex socio-economic grievances driving the crisis. According to him, this perspective is shared by seasoned security experts who recognize that tactical operations cannot completely replace the necessity of structural rehabilitation and non-kinetic interventions.
“After listening to their grievances, I have not seen a single step taken to alleviate those issues except the kinetic approach,” Gumi lamented. “Speaking with military officers, they admit that the kinetic approach only accounts for about 25 percent of solving this kind of conflict.”
Exoneration in Saudi Arabia
Beyond domestic security concerns, Sheikh Gumi cleared the air regarding his past legal battles abroad. He confirmed that the Saudi Arabian authorities had thoroughly investigated him years ago over alleged security infractions and subsequently dropped all charges after finding no evidence of wrongdoing against him.
The clearance, he noted, paved the way for him to successfully round up his advanced academic pursuits in the Kingdom. “After the Saudi Arabians exonerated me, they found me not guilty of all allegations and allowed me to finish my PhD in Islamic Studies,” the cleric added, positioning his academic records as proof of his unblemished character.
