Plateau Attack: Three Vigilantes Shot Dead While Guarding Community

Three community vigilantes have been killed after gunmen attacked NTV community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State while the men were reportedly keeping watch over residents and their homes.

The attack occurred at about 11pm on Tuesday, according to residents who spoke about the incident, with the assailants opening fire on the vigilantes during their night duty.

Vigilantes attacked while on duty

A resident, Gabriel Ayuba, confirmed that the men were watching over the community when the attackers struck.

He described the circumstances of the deaths as particularly painful because the victims were volunteering to protect other residents.

The spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed that three people were killed.

Calling for stronger security measures, Tengwong urged security agencies to increase patrols and take proactive steps to protect vulnerable communities. He also called for an investigation into the attack and for those responsible to be identified and brought to justice.

Security agencies yet to publicly confirm

At the time of the initial reports, attempts to obtain comments from security authorities were unsuccessful. That means the identities of the attackers and their motive had not been officially established.

The killing of vigilantes highlights a difficult reality facing communities where residents have increasingly relied on local security volunteers to supplement formal security arrangements.
