Manchester United have accelerated their summer recruitment plans, entering advanced negotiations to bring Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans to Old Trafford in a deal worth approximately £35 million.
The move for the 29-year-old Belgian international is part of a deliberate and sweeping restructuring of the club’s midfield department. Following the departure of Casemiro and a long-term knee injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte during the World Cup, manager Michael Carrick has made reinforcing the centre of the pitch his primary objective for his first full season in charge.
Tielemans, who has been a standout performer during his three-year tenure at Villa Park, brings significant Premier League and European experience. His arrival would signal a major statement of intent from the United hierarchy, who are looking to build upon a successful end to the 2025-26 campaign that saw the club secure a return to the UEFA Champions League.
The deal for Tielemans is expected to complement the high-profile capture of Andrey Santos, who completed his move from Chelsea earlier today in a transaction valued at £48 million.
In addition to their midfield renovation, United are also nearing the completion of a deal to sign veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The 35-year-old, who recently became a free agent following his departure from Leeds United, is being brought in to provide experienced cover and competition for current first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens, as the club prepares for a demanding season across multiple fronts.
These developments highlight the proactive approach taken by Director of Football Jason Wilcox as he looks to provide Carrick with the necessary depth and quality to compete for silverware in the 2026-27 season.
