Lanre Ogundipe Eulogises Ambassador Farounbi Ahead of Sunday’s ValidViewNetwork Discourse

“Baba Faroumbi is my father in every sense of the word. He is not merely a father figure; he is a mentor, a teacher, a guide and one of the principal architects of the journey that brought me to where I am today.”

Ogundipe recalled that his relationship with Farounbi dates back to 1976, when the respected broadcaster gave him his first job at NTA Ibadan.

“He gave me my first job in life in 1976 at NTA Ibadan. From that moment, he did not merely employ me; he invested in me. He watched me grow, observed the evolution of my craft and followed my journey in Communication Arts with the discerning eye of a father who had planted a seed and was patient enough to watch it become a tree.”

The former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and African Union of Journalists said Farounbi would often describe his professional growth through the powerful metaphor of a stream becoming a river and eventually an ocean.

“He would often describe my journey in the most generous metaphor. He said I began as a flowing stream in the field of Communication Arts, but that he had watched that stream grow into a big river. Then he would add, with the confidence of someone who had seen something in me long before others did, that in the foreseeable future, Lanre would become an ocean in the field.”

Ogundipe said those words have remained significant because they came from a man who knew where his journey began.

“Those words have remained with me, not merely because they were flattering, but because they came from a man who knew where my journey began.”

The tribute also revealed a fascinating dimension of the relationship between the two media professionals. Ogundipe explained that seeing the publicity for the forthcoming discourse immediately triggered a personal reflection.

“So, when I saw the flyer, my immediate thought was simple: Kayode does not know his guest at all.”

He clarified that while the founder of ValidViewNetwork may know Farounbi by reputation, understanding the man requires appreciating the extraordinary number of lives that have been influenced by his leadership, mentorship and generosity.

“He perhaps knows Baba Faroumbi by reputation, but to understand the man is to understand the extraordinary road that many of us travelled under his influence.”

For Ogundipe, the most powerful way to describe Ambassador Farounbi is through the image of a road.

“My most descriptive way of speaking about Baba Faroumbi is to compare him to a road. A road does not travel the journey for you. It simply provides the path upon which you travel. But when you have travelled far enough, you sometimes turn back and discover the people who built, opened and maintained the road on which your journey became possible.”

He continued:

“I have looked back on my own journey and discovered many of those construction engineers. Baba Faroumbi is one of the foremost among them.”

That description captures something profound about Ambassador Farounbi’s legacy. His career has extended across broadcasting, journalism, administration, education, writing and diplomacy. He became one of the prominent figures associated with Nigeria’s broadcasting history, serving in leadership positions within NTA and contributing to the development of television broadcasting. He later served Nigeria as an ambassador and remained active as a commentator on national affairs. His long career has given him an unusual vantage point from which to observe Nigeria’s evolution across several generations.

For Ogundipe, honouring such a man is therefore not an obligation but an expression of gratitude.

“That is why, whenever an opportunity comes to honour him, everything else becomes secondary. There are some people you do not merely attend an event to celebrate. You attend because gratitude demands your presence.”

He consequently pledged to make every effort to attend the Third Global Discourse despite whatever other engagements he may have had.

“I will therefore put aside whatever I may have planned and make every effort to be there to honour my father, mentor and benefactor.”

His prayer for Farounbi was equally heartfelt.

“My prayer for Baba is simple and heartfelt: may God continue to grant him sound health, strength, peace and a rewarding network of people around him. May the road he helped construct for many of us continue to produce generations of professionals whose lives and accomplishments stand as living testimony to his contribution.”

Ogundipe concluded his tribute with words that perhaps best capture the essence of Ambassador Farounbi’s influence:

“Some people pass through our lives. Others help build the road on which we travel. Baba Faroumbi belongs unmistakably to the second category.”
