Customs Intercepts 56 Containers of Prohibited Goods Worth N5.53bn

The headline figure is enormous, but the real story may be what is hidden inside the containers.

The Nigeria Customs Service says it has intercepted 56 containers of prohibited goods with a total duty-paid value of N5.53bn at the Port Harcourt Area II Command in Onne, Rivers State.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed the seizure while the containers were displayed to journalists.

Giving details of the interception, Adeniyi said the consignment included 45 20-foot containers of foreign vegetable oil, nine 40-foot containers of used clothing and two 20-foot containers of Channy tomato paste.

He said the Customs Service remained committed to protecting Nigerian farmers, manufacturers and businesses from prohibited imports, false declarations and other practices capable of undermining domestic production.

That argument deserves attention.

Where imported goods enter the country through false declarations or in violation of import restrictions, legitimate businesses operating within the law can face an uneven playing field.

But there is also an important fact that should not be lost in the headline.N5.53bn is the stated duty-paid value of the seized consignments.

It should not automatically be reported as N5.53bn recovered by government.

That distinction matters for responsible reporting.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Customs seizures can demonstrate enforcement activity, but they should not by themselves be interpreted as evidence of the total volume of prohibited goods entering Nigeria.

The next stage is equally important.Were the declarations deliberately falsified? Who imported the consignments? Were customs procedures abused? What sanctions will follow?

At the same time, enforcement must remain within the law. Seizure is an administrative and enforcement action; guilt for a criminal offence must still be established through due process.

The Customs Service therefore deserves scrutiny not only over what it seizes, but also over how seized goods, prosecutions and forfeiture proceedings are subsequently handled.
