The political landscape of Benue State experienced a significant shift Sunday, August 24, 2025, when Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh resigned as the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, a position he served since June 5, 2023. His resignation came amid a heated controversy involving suspension of four lawmakers accused of plotting his impeachment.

In a resignation letter addressed to the Clerk of the Assembly, Dajoh stated that his decision was made “in good faith and in the best interest of the state.” He reassured his continued commitment to his legislative duties representing Gboko West constituency. The resignation followed the suspension of lawmakers Alfred Emberga, Terna Shimawua, Cyril Ekong, and James Umoru for alleged impeachment activities against him.

Immediately following the resignation, the House convened an emergency sitting where Alfred Emberga, previously suspended and a member representing Makurdi North, was reinstated and elected Speaker. Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia warmly congratulated Emberga, describing his election as a testament to the confidence of his peers and expressing optimism for collaborative governance aimed at Benue’s development.
In a heartfelt note posted on his official Facebook page, Dajoh expressed profound gratitude to his constituents, colleagues, Governor Alia, Assembly staff, aides, and especially his wife, Kundumiyol Dajoh, for their unwavering support during his tenure. He emphasized the importance of peace and reconciliation in the state, ending his message with a call to “let there be peace and let’s move on. The journey is still ahead.”
The transition highlights a volatile but resilient legislative environment in Benue State, underscoring a communal hope for stability and progress under the new leadership.
