LAGOS

On October 11, in front of a Tottenham Hotspur Stadium crowd and a global broadcast audience, a 24-year-old girl from Cotonou-by-way-of-Lagos in Nigeria will do something no Afrobeats artist has ever done: headline an NFL halftime show.

Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, known to the world as Ayra Starr, is the artist at the centre of the announcement, and findings show her selection is already being read across the industry as a marker of how far Afrobeats has travelled, from Lagos house parties to the NFL’s biggest international stage.

The NFL confirmed the news on Thursday, August 27, 2026, describing her, in the league’s own words, as the “first-ever Afrobeats artist to headline an NFL game.”

The Details

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the performance will take place when the Philadelphia Eagles face the Jacksonville Jaguars, kicking off 2:30 p.m. BST (9:30 a.m. ET), part of a record seven halftime shows planned across this season’s international NFL matches, presented by American Express.

The show will be broadcast free-to-air on Channel 5 and on Sky Sports, putting Starr’s Starrgirl era, her third studio album, released August 14, 2026, featuring Wizkid and ZAYN; in front of viewers who may never have pressed play on an Afrobeats record before.

Starr, reacting to the announcement, kept it simple: “I am so excited to perform at the NFL halftime show in London. London is one of my favourite places in the world and to bring Starrgirl to the NFL global stage is a dream come true for me.”

Why The NFL Picked Her

Tim Tubito, the NFL’s senior director of global game presentation, music and entertainment, framed the choice as more than a booking decision.

According to his statement, “London is one of the most influential music cities in the world, and African music has been at the centre of that conversation for years now… Ayra Starr is a generational talent with a real connection to fans in this market.”

It is worth noting, for readers who like their milestones in context, that this builds on a pattern rather than starting one; Burna Boy, Rema and Tems performed at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game, and Burna Boy co-headlined the UEFA Champions League Final Kick-Off Show that same year.

What is happening to Afrobeats now is what happened to Naija cinema a decade ago and to Nollywood before that, a slow, then sudden, arrival on stages that once had no room for it.

The Bigger Picture

Ayra Starr’s rise, from a 2021 debut to more than seven billion global streams, a BET Award, two GRAMMY nominations and a Glastonbury slot, has always carried the quiet expectation that she was building toward something this size.

October 11 will be the test of that expectation in front of an audience the NFL itself measures in the tens of millions.
