HOLLYWOOD

On a stretch of pavement that has carried the names of legends for nearly a century, a girl who once dreamed in Cotonou, Benin, now has a star of her own, the first African musician ever to receive one.

Angélique Kidjo is the woman at the centre of the honour, a five-time GRAMMY winner and 16-time nominee who, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, received the 2,854th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in the Recording category, at a ceremony held at 7011 Hollywood Boulevard.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce also declared August 18 “Angélique Kidjo Day” , a rare civic honour layered on top of an already historic one.

A Long Road From Cotonou

Checks by ValidViewNetwork show Kidjo left Benin for Paris in 1983, in the middle of political repression that pushed many of her generation abroad.

What followed was more than four decades of work that refused to sit still, West African rhythms from her childhood fused with funk, jazz, gospel and R&B, across 18 albums and collaborations spanning Alicia Keys, Burna Boy, Pharrell Williams and Nigeria’s own Adekunle Gold, who was present at the ceremony alongside fellow Beninese star Djimon Hounsou.

Her latest project, HOPE!!, released earlier this year, features Ayra Starr, Davido, Quavo and Nile Rodgers among its credits, a small, telling detail; the same wave of young Nigerian stars now breaking into rooms like the NFL and the NBA were, this year, standing shoulder to shoulder with the woman who helped build the door.

The Moment Itself

Hollywood Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez told the gathered crowd that the honour recognised “contributions to music and culture around the world,” while Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. and actor Willem Dafoe joined Kidjo on the day.

For her part, Kidjo, 66, and visibly moved, offered a line that ValidViewNetwork found worth sitting with;

“If you had told me when I was a little girl in Benin that one day I would have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, I never would have believed you. I am so honoured to be here today and deeply grateful for this moment.”

There is a lesson here that outlasts the headline, one any Nigerian parent lecturing a child about “big dreams” might recognise: legacy is rarely built in the moment it is celebrated, it is built in the four decades nobody was filming.

What It Means Going Forward

Kidjo, who also serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and was named a spokesperson for the AFAWA women’s finance initiative at the 2019 G7 Summit, framed the star as bigger than her own career, a marker for the African artists who will walk the same stretch of pavement after her.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has confirmed her place in its Class of 2026; what she does with the platform from here is, by her own account, only just beginning.
