IBADAN, NIGERIA — In a decisive move to solidify its position as the primary alternative to the ruling class, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally inaugurated its Southwest Zonal Working Committee. The event, held at the Kakanfo Inn in Ibadan, Oyo State, marks a significant milestone in the party’s aggressive “grassroots-first” expansion strategy ahead of the 2026/2027 electoral cycle.
Presiding over the ceremony, the National Secretary of the ADC and former Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, described the gathering as a “demonstration of strength and unity.” The meeting brought together state chairmen from Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo, alongside key national stakeholders, to harmonize the party’s regional operations.

Grassroots Penetration and Structural Stability
During the session, Aregbesola reviewed comprehensive progress reports from the six state chairmen. The reports highlighted a surge in membership registration and the successful establishment of party structures at the ward and local government levels.
”I am deeply encouraged by the depth of our structures,” Aregbesola stated. “The reports clearly reflect our expanding reach into the grassroots and the organizational stability that sets the ADC apart. We are not just building a party; we are building a movement that is ready to lead.”
The National Secretary emphasized that for the ADC to remain a “people-centered alternative,” its officials must adhere to strict codes of discipline, unity, and coordination. He warned that the path to a credible democratic future requires total alignment with the national leadership to avoid the internal frictions often seen in larger political entities.

Inauguration of New Regional Leadership
A high point of the meeting was the formal inauguration of the Southwest leadership team. The newly sworn-in officers are expected to drive the party’s “Rescue Mission” in the zone, focusing on youth engagement, women’s inclusion, and diaspora collaboration.
Key appointments inaugurated include:
- Akinbolawale Omole: National Vice Chairman (Southwest)
- Captain Tunji Shelle: National Director, Communication and Programmes
- Professor Bode Ayorinde: Diversity and Inclusion Secretary
- Fabiyi Oladimeji: Deputy National Financial Secretary
- Alhaja Khafilat Omolabake Olayiwola: Deputy National Women Leader
A Credible Alternative for Nigerians
The ADC’s recent momentum in the Southwest is part of a broader national strategy. Following a 2025 leadership transition that saw former Senate President David Mark take over as National Chairman, the party has positioned itself as the hub for a grand coalition of progressive forces.

”The ADC remains firmly focused on offering Nigerians a credible alternative,” Aregbesola concluded. “Our mission is to deepen democratic values and ensure that governance returns to the people. Today’s inauguration is a clear signal that the Southwest is ready for that change.”
