​ABUJA, Nigeria — Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has sent shockwaves through the footballing world by declaring his ultimate career ambition: to become the first African manager to lead the legendary Real Madrid.

​Speaking on the After Afrique podcast with French outlet RMC Sport, the 48-year-old tactician did not shy away from his “impossible” dream. “My biggest dream? To become Real Madrid’s first-ever African coach,” Chelle stated, signaling a level of ambition rarely voiced by managers on the continent.

​Chelle’s stock has risen dramatically since taking the reins of the Nigerian national team in January 2025. He recently led the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where Nigeria finished as the tournament’s highest-scoring side. Despite a heartbreaking penalty shootout exit to DR Congo in the World Cup qualifying playoffs—a result currently under FIFA review due to eligibility concerns—Chelle has transformed the Eagles into a relentless attacking force.

​From ‘Waterman’ to World Class

​The journey has been anything but smooth. Chelle famously became a viral sensation during the 2023 AFCON while coaching Mali, when he was seen having water poured over his head after a stressful quarter-final exit. He recently revealed the gravity of that moment, disclosing he was battling atrial fibrillation at the time, with a heart rate reaching 200 beats per minute.

​Following successful heart surgery and his appointment to the Nigerian role, Chelle has moved from medical uncertainty to tactical mastery.

​”When I arrived, maybe I was a ‘small’ coach,” Chelle reflected on a conversation with star striker Victor Osimhen. “But now, we are dreaming big.”

​The Franco-Malian’s declaration is a bold challenge to the status quo in European football, where African managers remain significantly underrepresented in “Elite Five” leagues, let alone at the helm of a 15-time Champions League winner.
