LAGOS – In a transformative moment for the West African medical landscape, Nigeria has solidified its position as a regional leader in advanced healthcare. Surgeons at The Prostate Clinic (TPC) in Lagos have successfully performed the sub-region’s first-ever robotic-assisted gynaecological surgery, marking a definitive shift toward precision medicine and minimally invasive care.
The landmark procedure was conducted on a 30-year-old woman suffering from debilitating ovarian tumors. Led by Prof. Kingsley Ekwueme, a renowned Consultant Robotic Surgeon, the team utilized state-of-the-art robotic technology to remove the growths with a level of precision that traditional “open” surgery cannot match.
From Innovation to Impact
While TPC initially gained fame for its male-focused urological interventions—including the historic UroLift procedure in 2025—this latest feat represents a deliberate expansion into women’s health.
“We introduced the first surgical robot to the sub-region last year with a vision to revolutionize surgery,” said Prof. Ekwueme. “Today, we have extended that promise to women. This patient, who has lived in pain for months, was able to walk, eat, and return home within 24 hours of the operation.”
The surgical team included prominent experts such as Prof. Yusuf Oshodi, a Consultant Gynaecologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), and UK-based Consultant Gynaecologist Dr. Olaolu Alalade.
A Solution for Common Struggles
The breakthrough offers new hope for women battling conditions that are prevalent in Nigeria, such as:
- Uterine Fibroids: Affecting up to 70% of women in some communities.
- Endometriosis: A painful condition often requiring delicate tissue removal.
- Ovarian Tumours and Ectopic Pregnancies.
Prof. Oshodi emphasized that the robotic system’s precision is vital for preserving fertility. “We removed the tumors without compromising the reproductive organs. This ensures the patient can lead a pain-free life while maintaining her hopes for future childbirth,” he noted.
Curbing Medical Tourism
For decades, affluent Nigerians have traveled to India, Europe, or the UAE for robotic procedures. This successful surgery proves that the infrastructure and expertise are now available locally.
To further this mission, TPC has partnered with the Imo State Government to establish a dedicated robotic surgery center. This facility is expected to become a hub for research, training, and advanced clinical care, significantly reducing the “brain drain” and the flight of foreign exchange for medical reasons.
