Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have defeated Japan 2-1 in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to become champions of the competition for the first time.
The U17 World Cup victory was secured on Saturday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, making Nigeria the first African nation to lift the prestigious trophy, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE MATCH
Goals from Awawu Bashiru in the 39th minute and Oluebube Umejiaku early in the second half (47th) secured the victory for Nigeria.
Japan pulled one back late through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute, but the Flamingos held firm to complete a remarkable tournament turnaround.
Bashiru opened the scoring with a long-range effort after Japan’s goalkeeper spilled the ball into her own net, before Umejiaku doubled the advantage two minutes after the restart.
THE HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT
The triumph makes Nigeria the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
It also makes the Flamingos the first team in the competition’s history to lose their opening match and still go on to claim the title, having recovered from a 2-1 group-stage defeat to Poland.
Nigeria’s path to glory included wins over Puerto Rico, defending champions North Korea, Mexico, Venezuela, and a commanding 3-1 semi-final victory over Brazil before overcoming Japan in the final.
THE REACTION
The National Sports Commission led the wave of congratulations, describing the achievement as “a defining moment for Nigerian and African women’s football” and praising the team’s resilience and historic feat .
Head coach Akeem Busari, who guided the side through five consecutive victories after the opening loss, had emphasised focus and finishing the job.
Player Queen Joseph, who scored in the semi-final against Brazil, captured the broader significance: “I am super-proud of myself and my team because we made history by reaching the final”.
WHY IT MATTERS
For decades, African women’s football has been underestimated on the global stage.
The Flamingos have shattered that ceiling.
They lost their opening match. They were written off. And then they won five consecutive games, defeating the defending champions and dismantling Brazil, before holding off Japan to claim the ultimate prize.
This is Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title. It is a landmark moment for Nigerian women’s football and a source of national pride.
