Road safety authorities in Ogun State have confirmed a grim weekend following two separate traffic accidents along major transport corridors, which left three persons dead and seven others injured.
The separate incidents, which occurred on Saturday, underscore persistent concerns over vehicle maintenance, sudden mechanical failures, and road safety compliance on heavily congested routes.
Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway Collision
The first crash occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m. at the Kam Steel axis along the Sagamu–Ikorodu Expressway. According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), a patrol pickup van emerged from the Kam Steel access road onto the main highway, colliding directly with an oncoming commercial tricycle.
The impact of the collision caused the tricycle to somersault violently.
- Casualties: Eight individuals were involved in the incident. One adult female lost her life on the spot, while two other adult females sustained varying degrees of injuries.
- Emergency Response: Rescue teams promptly evacuated the injured victims to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu, where the body of the deceased was also deposited at the morgue.
Ota–Idiroko Road Tragedy
A few hours earlier, at around 3:25 p.m., a more destructive collision struck the Agarawu, Winners axis of the Ota–Idiroko Road. Eyewitness accounts and initial updates confirmed that a yellow Howo truck suffered a sudden brake failure, causing the driver to lose total control before ramming into a TVS tricycle.
- Casualties: A total of nine people were caught in the wreckage. Two individuals—a male adult and a female adult—succumbed to their injuries, while seven others sustained multiple injuries.
- Emergency Response: Good Samaritans and early responders rushed several of the injured victims to hospitals before official rescue units arrived. One of the deceased victims was immediately claimed by relatives, while the other body was deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Authorities Urge Strict Motorist Compliance
TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi noted that coordinated interventions by TRACE operatives, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Police Force helped clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow at both accident scenes.
