The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Omotayo Olajide, after his firearm discharged during an operation in Ajegunle, killing a girl and injuring another.
The Ajegunle incident occurred on Thursday night, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., during a violent clash between two rival groups over toll collection, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE INCIDENT
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police had been deployed after a distress call about a violent clash between the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys.
The groups were reportedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.
“During the operation, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm, and the bullet struck the two girls,” Adebisi said.
Both girls were rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital. One was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where she gave up.
The other child is receiving medical attention and is in stable condition.
THE POLICE RESPONSE
Adebisi said the command is deeply saddened by the loss of a young and innocent life and shares in the grief of the bereaved family.
She disclosed that ASP Olajide has been disarmed and detained, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough and impartial investigation.
“The command will keep the public informed of its progress,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, visited the bereaved family to express condolences and assure them that the matter would be fully investigated.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and conducting the inquiry with professionalism, transparency and accountability.
WHY IT MATTERS
A young girl is dead. Another is injured. And the man responsible is a police officer who was sent to protect them.
The circumstances of the shooting are still unclear. The police say the officer discharged his firearm during an operation.
But the operation was to quell a clash between rival groups. How did a stray bullet find two innocent girls?
The police have detained the officer. The SCID is investigating. The Commissioner has promised justice.
But for the family of the deceased girl, no investigation can bring her back. The question is not whether the officer will face disciplinary action.

The question is whether the system that sent him to Ajegunle, armed and unprepared for the chaos he encountered, will be held accountable too. ValidViewNetwork reports.
