The United Arab Emirates has sponsored a mass wedding for 250 Palestinian couples in Gaza, offering hundreds of newlyweds a moment of celebration amid the destruction, displacement and economic hardship caused by the war.

The event, organised by Operation Gallant Knight 3, saw brides in white gowns and grooms in dark suits exchange vows at the Marine Club grounds along Gaza’s seafront, ValidViewNetwork reports.

THE UAE’s HUMANITARIAN MISSION

Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed, said the initiative was part of the UAE’s broader humanitarian commitment.

“Gaza and its people remain at the heart of the UAE’s humanitarian efforts despite the world’s many crises,” he said.

The mass wedding, under the ‘Thawb Al Farah 3’ (Wedding Dress of Joy 3) initiative, was designed to ease the financial burden on couples who had postponed their marriages because of the war and displacement.

The UAE marked three years of Operation Gallant Knight 3, which has delivered more than 136,000 tonnes of aid valued at $4.16 billion, accounting for about 46 per cent of all international humanitarian assistance reaching Gaza.

THE ERROR IN COMPARISON

Some in Nigeria’s North may attempt to use this event to justify the mass weddings sponsored by northern governors.

That comparison would be a grave error.

The UAE is not a perfect democracy. It is a monarchy. But its monarchy has delivered a standard of living that is the envy of the world.

Dubai has transformed from a fishing village to a global city. Its citizens enjoy world-class infrastructure, healthcare, education and security. Life is sacred, and the government’s primary responsibility is to protect and improve it.

The mass wedding in Gaza is an act of international humanitarianism. It is the UAE extending a hand to a people devastated by war.

It is not a substitute for governance. It is not a distraction from domestic failure.

In northern Nigeria, mass weddings have become a recurring spectacle. Governors sponsor them with fanfare, claiming they are helping the poor.

But the same governors preside over states where children are out of school, where hospitals lack basic equipment, where farmers cannot access their land due to banditry, and where poverty is endemic.

The UAE sponsors mass weddings for Palestinians because it has already secured the dignity of its own citizens. Northern governors sponsor mass weddings because they have failed to secure the dignity of theirs.

The difference is not the event. It is the priority. The UAE uses its wealth to uplift others. The North uses its resources to distract from its failures.

WHY IT MATTERS

The Gaza mass wedding is a beautiful moment in the midst of horror. It deserves to be celebrated for what it is: an act of compassion by a nation that has the capacity to give.

But it should not be weaponised to defend the indefensible in Nigeria.

The North does not need more mass weddings. It needs governance. It needs schools, hospitals, roads, security and jobs. It needs leaders who understand that the standard of living of their people is the true measure of their success.

The UAE has shown what a monarchy can achieve when it prioritises its people. The North has shown what happens when priorities are misplaced. The comparison is not flattering. But it is necessary. ValidViewNetwork reports.
