A foreign national has rescued a sea turtle from roadside traders near Eko Hotel in Lagos after purchasing the animal to prevent it from being sold and ensuring its return to the ocean. The Lagos sea turtle rescued foreigner incident was shared by a Nigerian man who witnessed the encounter while leaving the hotel, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE RESCUE
According to the eyewitness, he noticed some men attempting to sell the sea turtle by the roadside when the foreigner stopped to challenge them over the trade.
The foreigner reportedly pleaded with the traders and tried to persuade people around, including police officers, that selling the animal was wrong.
Despite initially appearing to be the only person opposing the sale, he remained determined and eventually paid the traders for the turtle, not to keep it but to secure its release.
With the assistance of a police van, the rescued animal was transported to the sea and released into its natural habitat.
“Eventually, he paid the men for the turtle, not to own it, but to give it another chance at life. With the help of a police van, the turtle was taken back to the sea and released into its natural home,” the eyewitness said .
THE CALL TO PROTECT WILDLIFE
The eyewitness praised the foreigner for intervening and giving the turtle another chance at survival. He also urged members of the public to protect sea turtles and allow them to live freely in their natural environment, stressing that the ocean is their home .
WHY IT MATTERS
The rescue is a small but significant act of conservation.
Sea turtles are endangered species, threatened by poaching, habitat loss, and pollution. In Nigeria, they are often caught and sold in roadside markets, with little regard for their ecological importance.
The foreigner’s decision to buy the turtle was not an endorsement of the trade. It was a rescue mission. He paid the traders not to own the animal, but to set it free.
For the turtle, it was a second chance at life.
For the eyewitness, it was a lesson in compassion. And for Lagos, it was a reminder that wildlife protection is not just the responsibility of government, but of every citizen. ValidViewNetwork reports.
