The Federal Bureau of Investigation has announced the arrest of nine suspects in Nigeria and the seizure of 53 electronic devices in an international operation targeting cybercriminal networks accused of stealing billions of dollars from Americans.

The operation, codenamed Operation Blackout, also identified $11 million in potentially freezable funds across multiple countries, according to FBI Director Kash Patel, ValidViewNetwork reports.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT

Patel disclosed the development in a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday, describing the operation as part of efforts to dismantle international criminal networks responsible for online fraud.

“Operation Blackout is taking the fight directly to the international cybercriminal networks stealing billions from Americans,” Patel wrote.

“Our latest operation in Nigeria delivered: nine arrests, 53 electronic devices seized, and $11 million in potentially freezable funds identified across multiple countries” .

He said the criminal networks operated across national borders and exploited victims through scam centres.

“These scam centres exploit innocent victims, steal life savings, and operate across international borders believing they are beyond the reach of law enforcement,” he said .”They’re wrong. Thanks to Nigerian law enforcement and our partners in London for their outstanding cooperation”.

Patel issued a direct warning to those involved in cybercrime.

“To the criminals targeting Americans from overseas: JUSTICE WILL FIND YOU,” he added.

THE BROADER CONTEXT

The arrests come amid increased cooperation between Nigerian and foreign law enforcement agencies over alleged online fraud, romance scams and other forms of cyber-enabled crime.

In September, South African authorities handed over six Nigerians to FBI officials over allegations that they defrauded more than 100 women through a romance scam operation.

In August, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission extradited two Nigerians to the United States over allegations of online sexual exploitation and sextortion involving two teenage boys who later died by suicide.

In August 2025, the FBI arrested 22 Nigerians over alleged links to financially motivated sextortion schemes associated with a rise in suicides among American teenagers .

WHY IT MATTERS

The arrests are a significant blow to the networks that operate scam centres targeting Americans.

But they are also a reminder of the scale of the problem. The FBI has been increasingly focused on cybercrime originating from Nigeria, and the cooperation between Nigerian law enforcement and international partners is essential to disrupting these networks.

The nine suspects remain suspects. The allegations against them will need to be established through the legal process.

But for now, the message from the FBI is clear: the long arm of the law can reach across borders. ValidViewNetwork reports.
