Tennis Power Couple Svitolina and Monfils Call It Quits After Five Years of Marriage
The global tennis community has been left in shock following the announcement that high-profile power couple Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils are officially parting ways after five years of marriage.
Svitolina, 32, shared the deeply personal news through a formal statement on social media, pointing to the heavy psychological toll of the ongoing war in her native Ukraine and an internal quest for personal rediscovery as the driving factors behind the separation.
The announcement marks a sudden and emotional chapter for two of the sport’s most beloved figures. The pair tied the knot in July 2021 in a high-profile ceremony after beginning their relationship in 2018, later welcoming their daughter, Skai, in October 2022.
A Journey Shaped by Resilience and Strain
In her statement, Svitolina opened up about the profound invisible battles she has faced, noting how the geopolitical crisis in her homeland fundamentally altered her emotional landscape.
”Everyone knows how much Ukraine means to me. What I have rarely spoken about is what the war has done to me inside,” Svitolina wrote. She detailed enduring months of sleepless nights, intense self-doubt, and the gradual sensation of “losing myself”.
While praising Monfils for standing firmly by her side through her deepest valleys—including her remarkable post-pregnancy return to the upper echelons of the WTA Tour—Svitolina emphasized that external support could not resolve her internal healing.
”With time, I came to understand that I need to find my way back to myself and that I cannot do that within our marriage,” she expressed, calling it the most difficult realization she has ever had to confront.
Mutual Respect and Priority on Family
Addressing the public and the tennis fraternity, Svitolina stressed that the split is amicable, free of malice or blame. She commended Monfils for handling the transition with “a strength and grace I will never forget”.
The separation comes closely on the heels of Monfils’ retirement from professional tennis. The 40-year-old French star wrapped up his illustrious career earlier this month following a second-round match at the U.S. Open against Learner Tien.
Both athletes have reiterated that despite the end of their marital journey, their focus remains unified on parenting.
”Our marriage is ending, but our family is not,” Svitolina stated. “Skai will always come first. We will always be her parents, side by side, at every step of her life”.
