Professor Beatrice Olutoyin Opeolu, a Professor of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), South Africa, is set to complement Professor Lateef Sanni at the fifth edition of the ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse.
She is bringing her wealth of scientific knowledge, environmental research and international academic experience to the conversation on fake, adulterated and potentially unsafe food products.
The highly anticipated virtual discourse will hold on Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM West Africa Time, under the theme: “Poison on the Plate: Confronting Nigeria’s Epidemic of Fake and Adulterated Food Items.”
The discourse comes amid continuing concerns about fake, adulterated, contaminated and potentially harmful food products circulating in Nigerian markets.
The problem cuts across the food chain, from agricultural production and processing to storage, transportation, distribution and consumption.
WHY PROF. OPEOLU MATTERS
Prof. Opeolu is a distinguished environmental toxicologist and chemist whose career spans university teaching, scientific research, postgraduate supervision and international professional leadership.
Her research interests cover environmental monitoring, water quality, heavy metals, chemical contaminants and pollution management.
Her work also includes investigations into potentially harmful chemical compounds in processed meat products, making her scientific background particularly relevant to the forthcoming discourse.
Prof. Opeolu obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Management and Toxicology from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), in 1995.
She subsequently earned a Master of Science degree in Environmental Biology from the University of Ibadan in 2001 before obtaining her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Environmental Toxicology from FUNAAB in 2007.
Her academic career began at FUNAAB, where she served in teaching and research positions within the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology.
In 2008, she joined Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa as a postdoctoral researcher. She later became an Associate Professor in 2014 and attained the rank of full Professor in 2018.
Her research has examined environmental pollution, water quality, chemical contaminants and approaches to assessing and managing toxic substances.
Her work reflects the importance of scientific investigation in understanding the relationship between environmental conditions and potential risks to human health.
Prof. Opeolu has also established a strong record of professional service.
She is the immediate past president of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Africa and has served as Vice-President of the SETAC World Council.
These positions reflect her contribution to scientific collaboration and environmental research at both African and international levels.
Her professional achievements include a National Research Foundation C3 rating in South Africa in 2017 and the SETAC World Presidential Citation Award for Exceptional Service in 2015.
In 2023, she received recognition in the Trailblazer category of the inaugural Higher Education Women Leaders Awards organised by Higher Education Resource Services South Africa.
Prof. Opeolu’s research is particularly relevant to the ValidViewNetwork discourse because some food safety concerns require more than visual inspection or general public warnings.
Chemical contaminants may require laboratory analysis, while the potential health implications depend on the substances identified, their concentrations and the level of exposure.
Her published research on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in processed meat products provides a direct connection between her scientific work and the subject of the discourse.
Such research helps explain why appropriate testing and evidence-based risk assessment are important when evaluating potential chemical hazards in food.
Her expertise will therefore complement that of Prof. Lateef Sanni, the Executive Director of the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), whose professional work spans food science, processing, preservation, quality management and post-harvest technology.
While Prof. Sanni brings extensive experience in food processing, preservation and the management of agricultural produce, Prof. Opeolu brings a complementary perspective on environmental contaminants, toxicology and the scientific assessment of potential chemical risks.
Their combined expertise will broaden the discussion from maintaining food quality and safety across the supply chain to investigating contaminants and understanding their possible implications for consumers.
FROM FARM TO PLATE
The fifth ValidViewNetwork discourse will examine how unsafe food can move through the food chain and what can be done to stop it.
The discussion will address food processing, storage, preservation, transportation, product quality, consumer awareness, regulation and enforcement.
It will also examine the responsibilities of farmers, manufacturers, food traders, regulators and consumers.
With Prof. Sanni and Prof. Opeolu bringing complementary scientific perspectives to the programme, participants will have an opportunity to examine food safety from both food science and environmental toxicology standpoints.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the objective is not simply to generate alarm, but to promote evidence-based public enlightenment and practical solutions that can strengthen Nigeria’s food safety system.
The discussion will distinguish established scientific evidence from claims requiring further investigation, ValidViewNetwork reports.

The fifth edition follows the fourth edition of the ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse, held on September 27, 2026.
The fourth edition examined the theme: “The Lost Promise of 6 3 3 4: Can Nigeria Still Recover Its Technological Vision?”
It featured distinguished educationist and former UNESCO Permanent Delegate, Emeritus Professor Michael Abiola Omolewa OON, alongside veteran journalist and public intellectual Chief Tola Adeniyi.
The discussion examined Nigeria’s educational vision, technical education, practical skills, teacher dignity, indigenous languages and the role of education in national development. The fifth edition now moves the conversation from the classroom to the kitchen table.
THE VALIDVIEWNETWORK VISION
The Monthly Global Discourse is an initiative of ValidViewNetwork, founded by Associate Professor Kayode Ogunjobi FHEA, FFAN, an academic, environmental researcher, public affairs analyst, nature conservation advocate and media entrepreneur.
Through ValidViewNetwork, Ogunjobi has built a platform focused on credible information, public enlightenment, responsible advocacy and meaningful conversations on issues affecting society.
ValidViewNetwork operates around the broad pillars of Consultancy, Media and Advocacy, with a commitment to connecting credible knowledge with public engagement.
Lanre Ogundipe, former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and former President of the African Union of Journalists, chairs the ValidViewNetwork Advisory Council.
His involvement reinforces the organisation’s commitment to credible journalism, informed debate and responsible public engagement.
STAKEHOLDERS URGED TO ATTEND
ValidViewNetwork is calling on Nigerians and stakeholders around the world to participate in the fifth edition.
Farmers, food processors, manufacturers, traders, regulators, health professionals, researchers, policymakers, consumer advocates, journalists, students and members of the public are encouraged to attend.
Participants are also encouraged to invite others.
Food safety is everybody’s business.
Every Nigerian household is a stakeholder, no matter where its members live in the world.
Every consumer deserves access to safe food.
Every producer has a responsibility to protect consumers.
Every regulator has a responsibility to enforce standards. And every citizen has a role to play in demanding accountability.
THE CALL TO ACTION
The fifth edition of the ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse is expected to provide a platform for examining the threats posed by fake and adulterated food products and identifying practical pathways towards a safer Nigerian food system.
With Prof. Lateef Sanni bringing his experience in food science, institutional leadership and food preservation, and Prof. Beatrice Opeolu complementing him with her expertise in environmental toxicology, chemistry and contaminant assessment, the discourse will approach food safety from two important and interconnected scientific perspectives.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the battle for safer food cannot be won by regulators alone. It requires scientists. It requires farmers. It requires industry.
It requires government.It requires consumers.
And it requires an informed public that refuses to remain silent.
The food on the plate should nourish life.It should never become a source of avoidable danger.
The fifth ValidViewNetwork Global Discourse will therefore be a call to Nigerians everywhere to participate in a serious conversation about food safety, scientific evidence and the collective responsibility to protect public health.
