WASHINGTON — Hip-hop pioneer and tech entrepreneur DeAndre Cortez Way—better known to millions as Soulja Boy—has sparked widespread internet debate by signaling a potential run for the United States presidency in 2028.
The “Crank That” hitmaker took to social media to share a portrait of himself posed against a backdrop of a massive American flag, using the tagline “SOULJA BOY 2028” to introduce what he framed as a transition from entertainment and commerce into public service.
Rather than focusing purely on broad statements, Way outlined a four-point policy platform centered on economic opportunity, criminal justice reform, education, and the future of technology and artificial intelligence.
”From music to business to technology, I’ve always believed in thinking bigger and challenging what’s possible,” Way wrote online. “Now I’m exploring what it means to bring that same vision to public service. The future starts with a conversation.”
Uncharted Territory or Familiar Path?
Political analysts note that the rapper has yet to file official paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, name a campaign committee, or align himself with a political party. As a result, his 2028 ambitions are currently viewed as a public exploration rather than a formal candidacy.
The announcement immediately drew comparisons to previous high-profile presidential bids by hip-hop artists, most notably Kanye West’s 2020 campaign. Social media reaction has been mixed, with supporters praising the unorthodox platform and critics questioning the viability of a celebrity-led ticket.
Way is no stranger to the intersection of entertainment and politics. Earlier in the political cycle, he performed at a Crypto Ball event surrounding Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025—a booking that drew both scrutiny and defense from the artist regarding his business ventures.
As the early landscape for the 2028 race begins to take shape, it remains to be seen whether Soulja Boy’s digital rollout will translate into an official electoral campaign or remain an ambitious social media statement.
