American rapper Nicki Minaj has revealed that her Nigerian pastor and reports of violence against Christians in Nigeria influenced her decision to speak out about the alleged persecution of Christians in the country.
Minaj’s Nigerian pastor Christian persecution has become a recurring theme in her recent public statements, and her latest remarks have drawn attention from Nigerians across social media.
THE DISCLOSURE
Minaj made the disclosure during the X Takeover event at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin, Texas, according to reports by Leadership and Pulse Nigeria.
“For Nigeria personally, my pastor is from Nigeria, so I have a link to Nigeria because of him. And of course, I have a lot of Nigerian Barbs, but what I started seeing was the brutality with which Christians are being treated there just for being Christian,” she said.
She questioned why the issue had not received greater public attention. “And I thought, why isn’t anyone making a big deal out of this, you know? And sometimes when things aren’t cool to talk about, people don’t talk about it,” she added.
THE CALL TO ACTION
Minaj urged more celebrities, influencers and public figures to join efforts to raise awareness about reports of violence against Christians in Nigeria.
“So right now, actually, I’m hoping that more celebrities or people, influencers, I’m hoping that they come aboard the train to start speaking out about what’s happening to Christians in Nigeria. And I look forward to doing more to help in that way, in that cause,” she said.
THE BACKSTORY: MINAJ’S ADVOCACY
Minaj’s advocacy on the issue is not new.In November 2025, the US government designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern over allegations of Christian persecution.
In December 2025, Minaj spoke at a Turning Point USA event, where she also mentioned her Nigerian pastor and promised to speak up for Christians “wherever they are in this world.”
She has since used her social media platforms to highlight what she describes as the targeted persecution of Christians, alleging that they have been attacked, displaced from their homes and killed. She has shared screenshots of US President Donald Trump’s posts on the issue and has spoken at UN-related events.
THE CONTROVERSY
The claims of systematic Christian persecution in Nigeria are contested. The Federal Government has consistently rejected claims of a coordinated or systematic persecution of Christians, saying insecurity affects Nigerians of all faiths.
Some international outlets, including Rolling Stone, have questioned the scale and framing of the claims. Nigerian social media users reacted to Minaj’s latest remarks with a mix of appreciation and scepticism, with many focusing on her mention of a Nigerian pastor.
WHY IT MATTERS
Minaj is one of the most followed musical artists in the world. Her willingness to speak on Nigeria’s religious tensions brings international attention to a debate that is deeply contested within the country.

Whether her advocacy helps or complicates the conversation depends on how Nigerians receive it and whether the claims she amplifies are grounded in the complex reality of Nigeria’s security crisis, which affects Muslims and Christians alike.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Minaj has promised to do more to support the cause.
